Non-Spec E30 Question Tire Question

#1

We’re looking for some tires for Deb’s new car and I have a question for those that have been around for awhile.

Which tire would have more grip: RA1 in 225/50 or Hoosier R6 in 205/50?

Basically, does extra width in RA1 make up for compound in the Hoosier? Which one would you run for the same amount of money? Although I guess RA1 would have a longer life, but which one would get better lap time?

Hoosier R6. I haven’t run the RA1’s specifically but the nittos I run in the enduros are 225 and it basically the same or very similar tire to the RA1, there is not anoticeable difference in grip at least for me. Lap times are very similar.

The R6 compound is stickier and that makes the difference.

Thanks Jim. I was thinking the same thing - extra width is just not enough to make a noticeable difference. From what I can read the R6 is almost impossible to beat.

BFG R1s seem to be just as sticky as the HoHo’s and last longer – aka more heat cycles before they loose pace. Either way, log/mark your heat cycles.

My only advice re: R6’s is that they have a high grip level but break away much more abruptly than RA1’s, so depending on her level of experience that can be good. Or bad. Much easier to learn the limits on a progressive break-away, IMO.

+1. Good for racing. Bad for learning.

Got it. It’s not so much for learning but for the Hoosier contingency in TT.

All I wat to suggest is that you keep the women from behind the wheel in SpecE30. Look at the monster that Laura has become! Two more races and even Skeen would have a hard time defending the crown. I am just saying.
