Newbie Questions

#1

Hi Guys,

I am new here and I have some questions.
FYI - I have some racing experience (Firehawk, SCCA regional, HSR) but ran out of racing money when the child came (sound familiar). I’m still borke but I have the racing bug bad. As such I am considering makeing my street car raceable as in the old showroom stock concept. I have looked around and have seen several cars in the gallery with plates on them. My first question is 1) How many of you have streetable cars?

  1. I have also seen several cars in the gallery with custom cages with tripple door bars, etc. Am I correct in assuming that bolt in gages and/or roll hoops with roof bars down to the front door posts legal?

  2. Since I am not going to go "full race" set up right off the bat can I get opinions on which adjustbale sway bar kit is a) legal b) effective and c) tolerable for the street?

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Don

Don:

We’re glad you’re here. Your name looks familiar.

Most of your questions can easily be answered by the Spec E30 Regulations but I can help some too. I drove my car to the track for a season.

  1. We have about two drive-to-the-track racers, out of about 15 in the Mid Atlantic Region.

  2. Check NASA’s CCR’s for the cage requirements. Also…
    7.4. Roll Cages
7.4.1. All roll cage requirements in the CCR shall be met, except for the following:
7.4.2. Carpet/padding may be cut for roll cage installation (installation SHALL be metal to metal). Braces may pass thru interior trim panels.
7.4.3. Dashboard may be cut solely to allow passage of roll cage front down tubes.
7.4.4. Interior trim and door panels may be cut solely to permit passage and attachment of roll cage front and rear hoop braces and side impact bars.

  3. 9.3.8.7. A non-adjustable front anti-roll bar, measuring 22mm and an adjustable rear anti-roll bar, measuring 19mm, are required. Manufacturer is free, unless specified in these regulations.

Most have bought the Suspension Techniques set. It’s fine for the street.

'Hope to see you at the track.

I drive my car on the street some and actually did drive it to the track for the VIR race, I think it is much easier to sort the car if you can still drive it on the street some, as there is not anything in the rules that would make it intolerable…I left the power windows in which makes a big difference I think.

I, too, have a nearly-built SpecE30 that I drive on the street (and will be driving to the track). I have also left the power windows in. I have door bars, too, but I just didn’t gut the door. Once I’m in the car, this works out okay (i.e. I’ve got enough room to operate), but getting in and out is pretty difficult. A removable steering wheel (which I don’t have) would help immensely. I’ve kept mine street-worthy for several reasons: (1) I don’t have a tow vehicle nor the money for a tow vehicle. (2) It’s still hard for me to make the leap to owning a car that can only be driven 6 weekends a year. (3) Even though I’m not pushing the car around town as I am on the track, I still enjoy the familiarity I gain with it while being able to take it out for a spin.

Tekniq makes a "Snap-Off" steering wheel disconnect that’s street legal – it’s what I’ve got in my car (Zip-tied the key in the lock, so it’s permanently enabled.)

This site has the best price on the system… Tekniq’s website is more expensive.
