New to SE30

#1

I recently bought a decent 87325i for eventual Spec E30 use. I don’t have a competition license yet so i figure 2 years to get the license and prep the car doing most of the work myself. Is this realistic? In the meantime I will drive the slowly progressing car to autox/HPDE events. Is this anywhere near realistic as a time frame? Anyway i need to meet up with some of you guys in the Richmond VA area for a beer and mentoring. Thanks!

Dan, I would say your plan is very realistic and could be expedited should you decide you can’t wait that long. As far as mentoring is concerned, you may want to come down south for that.

Dan,

Can I assume from your name that you are a Hokie? There are a couple of us running in the SE division out of Atlanta. Welcome. This board is a great resource for anything you would need to know. Just run a search on the threads…

Dan,

I think your time frame is very realistic. Depending on your level of motivation with your build and how frequitly you get to the track… you could be racing by 2009 or even before the end of '08.

I run mostly with the Southeast but try to make a couple of the Mid-Atlantic races too. So, I’m sure we’ll met someday soon.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Spec E30.

Welcome to the insanity.
I’d allow at least a year for a total build, while still using the car for HPDE training. I got mine nearly a year ago to the day. It is now caged, 90% interior, 80% suspension, most deferred maintenance issues dealt with and pretty much just needing a paint job to avoid embarrassment. I’m hopeful I can go for my comp license early next year. Even if I have to put it off for whatever reason, I’ve found the car to be a total blast to run just in HPDE.
