New cage photos

Just got my car back with it’s new cage installed by John Pagel at Evil Genius Racing. Here’s a link to some happy snaps I took today:

John did an awesome job…I’m so stoked! I still need a few minor items (battery cutoff switch plate, mounts for window net) but the big part is finally done…woohoo!

Cheers,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I believe your cage may be illegal as that connection in the rear shock tower area makes the cage 10 points. I hope I am wrong. The rest looks really good though

I agree those rear attachments are not legal as I understand it but I’m not an expert so take that for what its worth

Thanks for the comments guys (although it’s kind of like having a turd thrown in my bowl of Cheerios.) I’ll have to defer to John as to whether this would be considered to have 10 attachment points. John has been building NASA and SCCA cages for years and is one of a handful of NASA safety inspectors in NorCal able to issue race car logbooks. Hopefully the cage is legal…otherwise we’ll have to break out the Sawsall.

I wish I had been able to take pictures of my recently completed cage before everything went back in the car. I may try to this weekend.

The rules say that a plate can be anywhere between 9 and 100 square inches and may be in multiple planes, any number of tubes may be attached… what makes that rear plate two points? If that is two mounting points then Scott’s cage has as many as 16 mounting points as all of the plates have multiple planes and many have multiple tubes… I do not believe this configuration to be illegal.

Here is the opinion of NASA’s RM Regional Director …

Per the CCR, this is not a legal cage. Two items:

"There shall be only 1 mounting point per plate". The tube that runs between the vertical plate and the horizontal plate is attached in two places. The extra tube is for stiffening and does not meet the spirit of the SpecE30 rules. I’d give the person a warning that the cage may be subject to protest by another competitor.

More importantly, the required rear brace does not mount to the plate as required in 15.6.13 - therefore the cage is illegal. I would not issue a logbook to this car.

Dave

15.6.13 Mounting Points

The roll cage shall be mounted to the floor of the car in six, seven, or eight points. The cage shall not go through the firewall. The seventh and eighth points must attach to the firewall or front fender wells. All cage attachment points must be mounted to plates.

Each required cage bar shall terminate on a plate with a 360 degree weld to the mounting plate, except as specified in Section 15.6.14.B. There shall be only one (1) mounting “point” per plate. This point is defined as where the “required tube” mounts.

All additional tubes mounted to that plate must be mounted as close to the required tube as possible [Ref: (15.6.14.B )].

15.6.14.B Tube / Mounting Plate Specifications

Any number of tubes may attach to a plate so long as they are touching each other at
the plate. There may be a small gap between tubes to allow welding 360 degrees around each tube. If there is no gap between the tubes, they must be welded around the base as much as possible to form a single figure-eight weld, AND the tubes must be welded to each other two (2) inches up from the base plate.

Yea, another NORCAL Spec E30 coming!!!

That thing looks like you could drop it off a building and not get a scratch on you, however I am not sure of the legality of that pink seat cover

Scott, when will you have it on track?
