Need Piston and head - Ranger or others?

#1

I haven’t pulled apart my dead SE30 yet, but will soon. I have a friend that has a complete engine, sans one piston. He dropped one on the floor and broke the skirt off of it.

Ranger, you killed 7 engines. You must have boxes of pistons, no? If so, can I get one?

What about a head if I need one? Anyone have one?

I’ll send you a piston tomorrow. It will come with a rod.

I have a spare head but it’s too cherry to give away. I’ll send you an email and we can discuss it.

Ranger, the guy with the engine tells me he has looked at several pistons and that none of them match, he claiming that there were several M20 engine configurations. His engine is a 1990. Does that make any sense? And can I use a 1990 engine with the old style head and old style cooling system, or must I keep the same year parts?

Three of the commonly encountered pistons will be those used on the ETA, SuperETA, i/is variants. For a US spec M20B25 engine there is only one piston from introduction of the engine in 9/86 through the end of production. In a like manner cylinder heads are interchangeable over the life of the M20B25. The only engine difference between the early and later style cooling system is the water pump.

Remanufactured heads complete with valves, springs, etc. can be found pretty easily. What’s your budget?

Sorry I was slow to get back to this. I missed the fact that you responded in the thread.

Did you get the piston that I sent? If so, all is well now and inexplicably no one is showering me with praise and grattitude? Your buddy going to send some $$ via Paypal?

To restate what Jim said…All M20B25 pistons are the same, so all 325i/is pistons are the same. e motors have different pistons, and pre 1987 M20’s (which is not an M20B25) probably have different pistons.

In terms of years, early motors like the '87 have a different water pump then the '89-90. I’m not sure when the change date was, maybe 9/87 for the '88 model year. The different water pump synchs with the different radiator and overflow tank. The late model also has a steel coolant pipe in front of the motor. BTW, it’s easy enough to adapt different water pumps to different year cars.

I just sent you money via paypal, and added in a few bucks for the power steering screws and for general irritation. Thanks for everything. I will know if I need the head this weekend, pulling it all apart.

I was going to pile on here, then I realized I couldn’t figure out which Scott is receiving this ball busting?

One of y’all needs to quit screwing up motors and half-assing the repairs so we can keep you straight. :stuck_out_tongue:  :woohoo:

It may have been for fashion advice, mullet conditioning, performance advantages of gold braclets vs. gold chains, the proper length of jorts, the usual stuff.

Regardless it wasn’t for any go fast tips, unless buy a car with a bigger motor is a tip.

It was a Chin Motorsports event. They did have some Viper race team there tho. Bright metallic purple vipers. Wouldn’t have been my first choice as a team color.

Am surprised that they wanted $$ to enter the paddock.

Al:

I wanted time in my Thunder Roadster, so I took it to the PBOC/Naara event. I run the Florida PBOC points series and this was a points race, although not in Florida. Then the Thunder Roadster broke, too, so that sucked.

Scott: I need that head if you are still offering to sell it. Check your e-mail or PM, I sent one to each.
