Need help! Rear suspension issues.

#1

I need help trouble shooting a rear suspension issue with my '87 E30.

My car is an ex-KP car and has a Turner Motorsports J-stock suspension setup (yes, it’s not a Spec E30, unfortunately). After noticing some vertical play in the right rear wheel, I had both rear wheel bearings replaced by a trusted BMW mechanic (independent shop). That was two months ago.

Today I put the car on a lift to change out some fluids and give the car a safety inspection and the slight vertical play in the right rear wheel is back. Could a wheel bearing fail that soon?

Also, recently I had an alignment check done and the I had over 4 degrees negative camber on both rear wheels and 5/8" toe OUT. Not good. It’s probably been like this since I’ve owned the car.

Finally, I initially thought this was a bumpstop issue but when I make hard left turns I hear a clunking sound coming from the right rear. Handling is fine and the car is very easy to drive and is predictable.

Does anyone see a trend here? I’m thinking that maybe the rear subframe or one or both trailing arms are tweaked. Maybe it’s subframe bushings?

I’de really appreciate any troubleshooting advice you guys can give me. I’m planning on having an area BMW race prep shop take a look at it but I’d like to have an idea of what the underlying problem might be. Thanks!

You’ll probably just have to jack the car up/ put it on a lift and start looking around. Check the rear subframe and trailing arm bushings for sure. Also, with the car on the ground, check the top shock mounts (inside the trunk) by bouncing on the rear bumper. I’m sure others will chime in with smarter things to scour.

Here’s the culprit: Bad right rear hub. The shop replaced it with a new hub (not cheap!) and a new bearing.

Regarding the alignment: I didn’t realize it but my car has the K-MAC adjustable eccentric rear trailing arm bushings. They have a reputation for losing their alignment settings and mine did!
