How many races the typical 4? I hope??

Any truth to the rumor of a night full oval race for all comers?

#3

I am in.

So can someone give a quick write-up of the Rock? The only things I am aware of is that the transitions to and from the banking are likely to crack windshields and that driving the banking is ‘different’.

Any other thoughts? How is it on tires? How far from the ATL?

#5

I did my first race there and finished 4th. It isn’t hard to learn. Going 3 wide around the banking just requires a screw loose or the appropriate brass spherical objects.

The inside is like the CMP autocross section. Not a fun track to drive but a blast to race, lots of passing opportunities.

I recall it being a little harsh on tires, but Al or someone may know more. The inside section was also pretty slick.

Garages are AWESOME! Hotels are far away and gross, worse than CMP. I think it took my 6-ish hours from ATL and it is in the middle of nowhere. Absolute nowhere.

I drove the Rock a few years ago, but haven’t raced yet. The windshield cracking seemed real to me. I think 3 or 4 went that weekend. The main culprit seems to be the transition from the infield back to the banking.

There’s two basic lines: Go up at about a 45-degree angle onto the banking, which seems to really twist the bodies when the RF wheel hits the climb.

The other way is to turn harder left, stay on the apron for a bit and merge/blend into the banking. I don’t know which is the preferred race line, but I know the blend approach is easier on the windshields.

Speaking of, after you guys get done there, I have two new PPG windshields available to whomever needs them!

So, Jim, would you recommend a tent over a hotel?

It is the one place I would consider camping out at. I think you can sleep in the garage, which is nicer than the room I had before.

It had the haunting aroma of BO, cigarette smoke, and disinfectant. (insert MLT joke here)

Don’t love this track as some do, but I’m planning to be there. Even the worst track is still fun to me.

Tom and I are in for this one!

Hey, rent a motorhome! We’ve stayed at the track and it’s all good!

My windshield needs to be replaced before I can run at Roebling again anyway (sunrise or sunset at least), so count me in on the Rock. This past weekend at Road Atlanta took a toll on it as well…

TJ, just sign up now. It’ll make you feel good.

I’ve got a new windshield sitting in my garage for a year. I’ve been waiting for Rockingham to give me a better excuse to swap it out.

Plus I need to use up my RA1’s

Dang, I’d like to go race the Rock, but I have to stay in town and help run the Peachtree event one more time… Getting jealous.

#14

I’m there. Hoping to break a windshield (but nothing else) so I have an excuse to replace the yellowed-pitted-chipped one I have.

#15

even though I am running at Mid O, I WOULD NOT MISS THE ROCK…I am even going to bring a bottle of bleach for the showers so yall non campers wont have anything to complain about. The track is pretty hard on tires, and if we do 4 races, it will be a great op to burn up some RA 1’s…

A night oval race would rock…

According to Jim, they are likely to add a second race each day, meaning a total of 4 races for the weekend.

The points-paying races will still be the Lightning races Sat/Sun. The combined, extra race day (for both race groups) will be a fun race. Not sure if any gimmicks (IFU, LeMans finish, whatever) are included, but you never know with Jim.

Also, the management of the Rock put the kibosh on any oval racing for us sporty-car types, so it will all take place on the Roval layout.

I have done a bunch of the 1 hour “fun” races at the rock…a lot of fun to pass faster cars in the infield, Patton and I split a mustang in the horseshoe one time…that was pretty dang cool
