My New Steel Coffin!

#1

Last time I was on-track was about 7 months ago. I promised myself not to return until I could do it more safely. Now, I’ve blown all my money on my cage, seats, harnesses, HANS, etc. and don’t have anything left to return to the track. Doh! Here’s a picture of Chris Schimmel’s latest handiwork–the collaboration between a talented welder/cage builder and a floundering architect can be dangerous! Anyone near Durham, NC, who is contemplating a cage is welcome to come check it out.

Pic was too big. I’ll try again.

Third time’s a charm (I hope).

I would recommend not telling your mother or wife your nickname for your racecar.

Great looking setup! Where did you source those seats??

#6

looks great!
I’d find a spot for the fire ext. closer to the driver, though.

Do you have more pics of the cage that you could email to me at leggwork@yahoo.com. I’m just getting ready to visit the cage builder.
cheers,
bruce

I’ll work on better extinguisher placement–that’s where the cage builder strapped it. It’s a Catch-22, I guess. You want to be able to reach it, but you don’t want to smack it.

The seats are Momo Cup VTRs, which I’m told are the same thing as the Cup GT. I found them on eBay for $620 shipped for the pair; they’re nearly 5 years old, but they’re FIA-rated and were never installed. I’m really happy with how comfortable they are. They fit in the car pretty easily, too. Momo seat, Momo side mounts, and a VAC Motorsport mount was pretty much plug-and-play, but the seat is not as centered on the wheel as I would like. I don’t really notice it when driving, but since the VAC Motorsport mount cost a fortune and was a custom-milled piece, I would have thought they could do a better job centering it up.

Bruce, I’ll e-mail you some pictures.

Sasha,

Can you shoot me a photo or two of your window net lower mount? Chris Schimmel described for me what to do, but that was a while ago and I’m a little lost. My email is my SpecE30 username @dvsmith.net

(Nice cage, BTW.)

Sasha,

I’d say they were Cup GT’s as well - that is what I have in my car (black and grey), They are great seats. I made a custom bracket and have a slider on the driver’s side, since my son and I share the car (he is a little taller). Great looking cage!
