Motor oil and such

#1

Hey, just wondering what everyone else does for motor oil and how often are you changing it? What oil and filter do you like?

#2

Mobil 1 15w-50 with OEM filter change after every race/track weekend or everyother

#3

Something I learned after switching to Mobil 1 on my 200K engine - it will eat up varnish in the engine (good thing), exposing areas that are now prone to leak (bad thing).

Nothing better for new/tight engines.

Right, wrong or what ever, I use Mobil 1 10W30 and change it when I think of it. Sometimes once a season (6 or more events) and sometimes I half that interval and change it in the middle of the season. I also use off the shelf fram or whatever filters. These are not ultra tight pure race engines.

But if you want to error, error on the side of conservitiveness.

I use Cheveron Delo something in the diff and tranny. Add about half a tube of LSD additive as well.

Yeah, I found that out too on my recently departed M20. When I put synthteic in it, it leaked like a sieve.

I’ll go Synthetic in the rebuild with fresh gaskets though.

I have been using Valvoline Race oil 20w-50 (not synthetic) for the last 4 races and had very little leaking and used hardly any oil between changes.

I was causioned about leeks, which is why I went with the thicker/heavier 15w-50 rather than the 10w-30. When I got my car it had less than 100k on it, so I felt pretty good about switching. The first time I used synthetic I also added some Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer as an extra preventative measure

Castrol GTX 5-50 synthetic changed after 6 events. Did have the leaking problem on our high mileage car (mine). Mike’s car has no leaks. Mine almost caught fire at CMP from oil leaks, but after changing the cam shaft oil seal, I think the primary leak is fixed. We use the K&N race oil filter, primarily for the nut welded on the end of the filter that makes it really easy to get off.

I use typically use Amsoil 10W40 and change it once a year. Of course I am not racing per se yet and just using the car as a DE car that is driven to and from the track.

For your racing only cars, the proper drain / sample interval is probably about 10 hrs of track time.

The proper way to determine how long one should run the oil is to perfrom used oil analysis. http://www.oaitesting.com/index2.htm

The kits cost about $20 (after postage) which includes a sample jar, instructions, and the lab fee. The reports measure the viscosity (including any change form normal), additive package stability, concentration, and depletion, report any contaminants (like coolant), and report several different wear metal concentrations in parts per million. Most reports are normal but an abnormal report can alert you to pending disaster.
