May Infineon Race Report late post

#1

Valley Motorwerks entered the #1 car into its second race of the season at Infineon Raceway on May fifth and sixth. As always, getting the car ready for the race came down to the wire. At the final lap of last month’s race, the number six rod bearing decided to let go. The engine rebuild started shortly after that, the newly refreshed engine wasn’t dropped into the chassis until two days before the race!

Saturday: Donny Edwards took the wheel of the #1 Valley Motorwerks Spec E30 for Saturday’s race. He was competing against the #804 Valley Motorwerks sponsored car of Steve Krshul for top honors. This was Donny’s first time in the new car and he adjusted to it very quickly. Donny set fast lap of qualifying with a blisteringly fast 1:59:6, passing EVERY Spec Miata on the track. Typically the SpecE30’s will turn approximately the same times as a Spec Miata. Donny went on to win his inaugural race in the #1 car. Way to go Donny! Steve Krshul took second place and turned a very repectable fast lap time of 2:04.5.

Sunday: Rookie racer Kevin Borchers took over the helm of the #1 car for Sunday’s race. Steve Krshul and his #804 car were not able to compete on Sunday due to prior obligations. The qualifying session on Sunday was a mess and the session ended up being black flagged early so Kevin was unable to get a clean lap in. He managed to pull of a 2:05:3 that set him right behind the Spec Miata field for the start of the race. At the start of the race Kevin got by 4 Spec Miata’s before turn two and ran a 2:03:8 for his fastest lap of the race. Being that it was Kevin’s only second race, he had to take it easy and complete the day without any spins or other “incidents” to get the race signed off for his rookie book. Only two more to go! Kevin is still getting used to driving in traffic, but managed to bring the #1 Valley Motorwerks machine home unscathed for another win on Sunday. Overall it was a very successful weekend for the Valley Motorwerks racing team. We are looking forward to next month’s race at our home track of Thunderhill on the second and third of June!

Thanks for the write-up. And congrats Donny - 1:59.6 is very quick around Infineon in a spec car. The best I could do last fall was a 2:00.4, and that scared the crap out of me!
