Manual rack

#1

Is there any reason not to run a manual rack? I’m paranoid about the possibility of the power rack failing while not using the power assist. I don’t want to run the power steering. Just more stuff to fail and because of the added weight and hp losses. Thanks

I’m not aware of a legal manual rack to use. AFAIK all the US cars had power steering, and if you put in a manual rack (from a different BMW model, or a Euro car) you’d have a different steering ratio which would not be legal.

I’m not aware of anyone having an issue with the rack. Scrap all the power steering stuff and buy a power steering delete plate from Garagistic. It’s a straightforward process.

There is a manual e30 rack available. AFAIK running it would be legal. Don’t know why one would want to tho. It’s a “slower” rack so more turns from lock to lock and you don’t often see people pursuing slower steering.

I agree that PS delete is the easy way to go.
