Lower rear shock mount...was Sway Links - READ!

Hey guys, I noticed in the couple of pics posted to the sway links thread a problem with your lower shock mounting. You should be installing a large washer (larger than the diameter of the mounting housing) to prevent the bolt head from pulling through the bushing.

You can see that if the rubber bushing in the shock body itself fails, there is nothing to prevent the bolt head from going right through and thus you have no attached shock down there. Bad.

This is a major safety issue. I cannot count how many times I see this when I inspect cars and it still floors me. This issue may not be as common anymore but I think it’s due more to people installing a proper washer. This has been known for a long time, I knew of this way back in like '99 or even earlier.

Seriously, install a large washer to prevent this dangerous situation from becoming reality.

If you look at most Koni set ups you can see they have a washer fitted onto the end of the bushing for this exact reason. I think the Bilsteins come with a large washer but most people put it at the top instead of the bottom. In fact I just checked quickly and even the instructions show to mount the washer down there. I typically replace the Bilstein washer with an even larger one but the one that comes with should stop the bolt head from pulling through completely.

I know of people who have wrecked cars due to this issue, it’s not an urban/internet myth.

Be safe.

well i had 15min to kill and needed a project. i slapped on two 1 1/2" fender washers per side and she’s looking good. I did have some shrimpy looking washers on there.

Thanks

If you want to solve two issues at once, Factory 3 has a good value on a set of towing-tiedown adapters that can bolt on to the lower shock mounts AND prevent the shock body from slipping off the mounting bolt.

Thank you!!
I like that idea (tie-down eye and washer), neat, but you need to give us a better price than posted.
BTW, I don’t have washers right now, and it surprised me when I installed the Bilsteins since the headbolt has a small washer built-in, but the Konis came with big washers, the same diameter as the rubber bushing.
No washer, bad boy:whistle:

Have you priced these at BMP or Carr?

Here’s a link to BMP

Carr is higher than that. Just search for "Tow".

Damn! I guess you have a good price then. Any "special" discount for the Spec E30 community?

Ok, washers in. It had a little washer, which I kept anyway.

Where does it say in the rules you can use special coatings on your brake calipers??

Anyway, What size is the bolt holding on the rear shock? 1/2" I looked and don’t have a washer handy that is big enough. So what size hole do I need and what OD do I need?

Thanks,

Michael O.

Bolt is M12. Washer is A13, PN 07 11 9 931 021. (for OD I would just measure it on the damper)

Special coating? You are kidding, right? That’s caliper paint, and 6.5.1 says cars may be painted any colors, and the brake caliper is part of the car, or not?
No, actually is a heat disipating coating that allow the calipers to run cooler developed my Ferrari, and I’m testing it;)
I took the bolt with me to Lowes and got the first pair of washers that fit, don’t know the size, sorry.
