Legal to Remove Exterior Side Trim

#1

I sent an e-mail to Carter about this but thought I would post as well. I’m in California and am preparing my car to be one of the early pioneers of West Coast SpecE30 racing. The car is getting painted this weekend so I have all of the exterior trim off. I have three questions:

  1. Can I legally leave the trim off of the car? (I’ve seen several E30 race cars that look quite fine without trim and just the nicely painted "trough" where the trim used to be.)
  2. If I can leave the trim off, can I fill the holes (e.g. with rivets/bondo to smooth them out) where the trim used to attach?
  3. Could I fill the entire "trough" to create a smooth surface for graphics/number application?

Thanks in advance for the help. We’re looking forward to a successful West Coast SpecE30 season!

9.3.13.27 says you can.

actually it is 9.3.13.29,
don’t know about filling in the whole trough though

I don’t think anyone will protest if he fills it in. If anything, all that Bondo will probably be heavier than the stock trim.

actually, somewhat amusingly, there is somebody around SF claiming to be the spec e30 champion in that area - he is a young guy who raced in the 25hours at Thunderhill

Thanks for the responses. Traqrat, some day I’ll actually learn to read… Carter did clarify over e-mail that filling the trough will not be legal but filling the holes would be.

Might as well just put the trim back on after the paint job. Black trim on white looks just fine IMO.

Steve, question for you. If you were the only one running SE30 over here, what group did NASA run you in? And did you get your own separate green flag?

We’ll need to coordinate on which races to attend so that we meet the minimum number to earn Toyo Bucks.

9.3.13.29 Side moldings, side reflectors, etc., may be removed and attachment holes may be filled.

Nothing about the troughs so…well, we all know the rest.

And again, keep it simple and you’ll be happier.

He would be wrong. I’m 90% sure that know who you mean, and from what I hear he’s a darn good driver. I believe he drove one of Mike’s cars at Thunderhill one weekend (not in the 25hr race) for testing purposes, but I don’t think he ever officially entered in a race.

That would be Auston Harris, a young man I worked with throughout 2005. He ran the Formula TR (Formula Renault) 18 race series, finishing 3rd in the series championship. I also put him in one of the SpecE30’s for two NoCal races, which gave him enough points to finish first in the season championship points (it looks good on the resume). He also was the third fastest of six drivers in the third place Subaru WRX at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, his first time in a turbo and first time in an all wheel drive car, his third weekend in a sedan. Oh, he turned 15 on Dec 11!

We are looking for sponsorship to continue his development this year…

Oh - I assume it’s a NorCal vs. SoCal thing then. I didn’t think about that.

That’s who I was thinking of. I remember telling Mike at Cal Speedway last spring that when I was 14 my parents wouldn’t let me get a moped, and here’s a kid flying around the track in an open wheel car at the same age - not fair!!

oops - hit submit x2
