Jim Levie Rebuild Program

#1

Jim, by now your thoughts on the wrecked car: "I’m mad as h3ll and look at the time and expense that this will cost to be back on track."
Or, “Do i really want to be back on track?”

You’ve been a great help to the racers in the Southeast with your willingness to pitch-in.

How can we help you? What is the update?

Regards, Robert Patton

I think Jim picked up a new chassis earlier this week. Let the rebuild begin.

and he is adding active armor plates and fender spikes. He is also thinking about adding a giant boxing glove attached to a big spring.

He’s coming to get a car from me this weekend. He is intent on getting back on track ASAP. I’ve never talked to anyone so determined.

He mentioned to me he is trying to get a car built by Oktoberfest, but definitely by IFU3

As soon as I can get the wreck off the trailer (this afternoon I hope) I’m going to pick up the car. That might happen tomorrow, but certainly this weekend.

I have a slot reserved with Kirk racing (Sept 7) to build/install the cage. I want Mark to put in the strongest cage he can. The idea of being surrounded by a lot of cold steel is now very comforting for some odd reason.

I noticed Sunday evening that the center net was no longer up. I haven’t yet looked at it to see what happened, but a RaceTech Halo seat is going in the new car.

Chuck Baader is going to take one of the four engines I have and build a motor.

My goal is to have the car race ready by O’Fest.

…nuff said above?

Random Thoughts:

After seeing the video of Steve D’s off with all of the dirt flying around I started driving with my visor down. That rear window pretty much exploded and there are bits of glass everywhere in the car. So keep those visors down guys.

The standard spring clamps used to hold a fire bottle in place aren’t sufficient. After the wreck the bottle was out of one clamp and almost out of the other.

Good deal Jim. Keep us posted. Don’t forget to replace safety stuff that is one-time-only use. I know this includes the belts. Not sure it includes the HANS straps, or HANS itself, but do your research.

Do you know yet how much you will transfer over from the old car i.e. is there a weekend transmogrification to be scheduled?

#8

I haven’t yet checked into the HANS, but that was on the list. The belts and seat are a given.

Once I get the 96 up on jack stands I’ll know more. But right now I have no idea what is/isn’t salvageable.

Prepping the new car for the cage isn’t a big deal and I can get that done in a day or two. Likewise, a motor swap is pretty easy for me. I don’t know that there will be a need to have a “barn raising”. We’ll see after I get further into things.

Thanks for the offer!

Great to hear you will be back out soon. Please do let us know if you want/need any help. I am more than willing to come and help you out. Maybe I can break stuff or be a part fetcher or something as my “knowledge” of all things E30 is pretty much limited to what you tell me when I call and ask a question.

I work for the company that developed the MOAB (Massive Overpressure Aerial Bomb, aka Mother Of All Bombs). So I looked through some of the stuff we have and have settled on reactive armor and a roof mounted, proximity armed, self tracking mini-gun and armor piercing rounds. The aero drag will terrible, but it won’t matter because I’ll never be passed as long as there is ammo left in the feed tray.

On a serious note. I want to thank all of you for the support you’ve given and offered.

HANS used to send you new teathers and a Hans T-shirt after a big hit, just send them a letter. If you need any help or random e30 stuff, let me know. I have an extra set of subframe bushings that came with the new car…

Jim, I wholeheartedly agree on your choice of new seats. You may or may not recall my wall encursion at turn 7 two years ago. The seat held up beautifully. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. I have a lift if you need to use it.

Let those roids settle down before you start typing next time. Or did you mean using your race car to break [more] stuff? I suppose this same practice should apply.

I noticed looking at that huge shutterfly album of this weekends race, nearly everyone who had a closeup shot coming out of 10B had their visor up with no glasses or eye protection. I don’t want to sound like a ninny but it is in the rule book to either have the visor down or eye protection, but I don’t think anyone is ever called out on it. I’ve done it as well, so I’ve got no room to talk, but I usually put it down during a race.

If you saw that video of Felipe Massa get hit in the head by debris a last month, it would make you think about it.

Dude, adding a zero to the end of your low class offer for my multiple podium stallion still won’t get you a top 3 finishing spot… It’s not the “skates.” Embrace your mediocrity.

All of those open wheel guys are like little jockeys (ex Kubica I think?).

Geegar and I ‘met’ Bill A and Joey Hand at petit one year and those guys are like little oompa loompas too.
