ITS to Spec E30 Conversion

#1

Gentlemen,

I have an opportunity to acquire an ITS spec E30 in trade for my street E30. The obvious lure is that I do not have to take the time and money to convert my street car (which is still a pretty nice car) in to a race car. The downside is that I know it is not legal for Spec E30. From what I read of the rules however, it could be if I put a stock engine back in it and put the spec springs and shocks back on. What else am I missing? Has anyone else ever taken this route.

Don:

I think you’re the first to consider this but yes, it can certainly be done.

And you can usually get some money back by selling the non-Spec E30 parts to other racers.

ITS allows a non-stock differential so you’ll need to check that also.

Love to find some non spec E30 legal parts that could be used on a street /track car.

Anyone have anything sitting around they took off their car to make a spece30 car?

I did pick up springs and shocks.

Thanks for the replies.

That is a good point Legwork. I think this particular car does have a 4:10 M3 diff in it .

This avenue might be a worth a second look. I can buy the entire car cheaper than I can convert my car (although it does need a little work) , I can go racing next week (albeit not in spec E30) and by the time spec e-30 rolls into Florida I can have some experience under my belt. Hmm.

I’ll take the diff off of you if you buy it…as long as it isn’t $1000s of dollars!!!

Ric
Ric,
The diffs are different between the 4 and 6 cylinder cars…or actually the axle flanges are

M3 too?

Do you swap axles to get them switched?

Must be some way around small case 4.10 to full size must be do able!

I need to go LSD on my new car…I figured I’d go overbuilt with a large case.

Is that the only difference? Are the ring and pinion the same size? I thought the small case diff can’t handle the torque of the 6 bangers?

Ric
I am pretty sure you can fit the axle flanges from the 4 banger into the bigger diff. I will research that tomorrow
