Interior Rearview Mirror Replacement

#1

Regarding this tidbit from the spece30 regulations:

9.3.13.15. Interior mirror(s) may be replaced with multi-panel type mirror, so long as they do not extend beyond the confines of the interior of the vehicle.

Does this mean that I can’t replace the mirror with a single pane, convex mirror? This is what was in the car before it was stolen in january and i just have to assume that it was stripped out of the car along with the seats, etc.

I’m not a big fan of the multipanel mirrors - they make me a bit nutty - and wanted to know what the rest of the folks are using. (And if I can’t use a single panel mirror - does it seem like we’re being a bit nick-picky?)

Thanks!
Natalie

You are right, "to-the-letter" reading of the rules excludes single pane convex mirror, however this was discussed while back and IIRC should be corrected in the next revision of the rules. Ofcourse Carter has the last word on all this, but I would say go ahead and put it in…

All the fast guys are running convex mirrors

That’s 'cause the fast guys don’t need to know who’s coming up behind them! Me, I need my Wink so I can see down the length of the straights! The convex mirror makes everything any farther than your rear bumper about the size of an ant.

it’s $66 at flyingbrick and did you have to buy a rollbar mount separately for your wink?

this is new technology on the design of the optics, so unless you have firsthand experience with this one, I don’t believe comparing it to a normal convex is correct.
thanks

I agree that it would be interesting to hear from someone with first hand experience with this mirror (I have 5 pane Wink…)

I have the Allview mirror from CDOC, I paid around $75 for it. I have also had the Longacre and Wink. I much prefer the Allview to the Longacre and it is slightly better, IMO than the Wink. The field of vision is not quite as good as the Wink but you can see everything is a more compact space vs. a 36" long mirror that you have to scan across. If my old 4 panel Wink mirror didn’t vibrate so bad I probably would have kept it.

Compared to the Longacre it doesn’t distort the view as much and has a larger viewing area since it is not tapered to the ends.

The roll bar clamp system is very secure and does not vibrate at all. There is also a lot of flexibility in mounting options with the Allview.

(Just how long does it take to get my endorsement check from Allview? !

Single pane convex are fine and will be included in the '07 Rules.

Yes, we’re still planning to wrap it up but as we have said many times, there won’t be any significant changes in the Rules.

Thanks for the clarification… This helps settle the debate going on at the Black household!

Thanks for the Allview review… we’ll have to consider this mirror when we’re re-purchasing all the equipment for the car.

I installed my Wink with two pipe clamps securing the included bracket to the front of the halo. It works great and doesn’t vibrate.
