Interesting weekend

Not related to Spec E30 but I had to tell somebody about the student that I had the past weekend.

Well, not really the student but his car.

1965 Covair. Rear engine way in the back. Only lap belts.

You could see that only maybe 1/2" of sponge covering the metal dash board.

With so much weight in the back, the car really wanted to step out every chance it got. (RRR)

The engine is running rich. You can smell the gas in the cabin. We are in 4th gear and trying to do maybe 100mph WOT going down the main straight. I have only lap belt on me and the hard dash staring at me.

So, why am I doing this?

Actually, the student was great. He was a fast learner and had a good time drifting that thing through T5.

So, if you feel like complaining about 20+ year old cars, think of people driving 40+ year old cars.

The guy’s jack stands probably say “Folgers” on the side.

Chi - Don’t do that any more. Your life is worth more.

The funny thing is I was actually paying $100 to instruct the past weekend.

Is surprising that Tech passed him with only lap belts.

Oh, I forgot to mention one other detail.

Drum brakes. Front and Rear.

After about three hard braking laps, as we were going into turn 1, the car started to pull hard right. Same thing going into T4. Had to pull him into the pit and sat there 3 min. to cool the brakes.

After that we limited the front straight speed to about 80 mph.
