Instrument cluster help

I have been putting my car back together after the cage install and I have run into an issue. Everything in my instrument cluster is working except for the tach and the speedo. it worked before but know nothing. Any suggestions. My cluster has a big green black plug on the backand I have seen pics of other e30 clusters that don’t have this. Don’t care about the speedo working but the tach would be nice.

There was a lengthy discussion about this a few months ago. You might try looking thought old forum discussions. It sounds like you have a few connections missing - especially the green ones, which I believe are related to tach input.

my tach stopped working after my cage install also. It turned out to be just a blown fuse. Not sure about yours though. I remember that there are a couple of wire harnesses that look alike and can be easily confused. Good luck!

In the Resources forum, there’s a link to a Step-by-Step dash removal guide, with pictures of the cluster wiring.

The car in the guide is an ‘e’, which lacks the green connector, but IIRC, the green connector goes in above and to the right of the yellow socket in the photo on the first page of the guide.

The one thing I have always recommended is for anyone who has an E30, is BUY THE BENTLEY :woohoo:
It is a great resource, worth every penny and you will learn a lot about the car just reading the chapter summaries

It was a fuse that looked good from just looking at it, but I said screw it and changed in anyway. Been working ever since. Glad that was it and not a wire or something that I cut while stripping the car.

Old thread, but I’m having the same issue.

I connected the blue connector to the blue plug, yellow to yellow and white to white (and the instrument bulbs). I don’t see any big green connector. Is it something strange like two black connectors or something that connect to the green plug? (my speedo and tach are dead too)

Sadly I labeled everything else :wink:

In my case it was fuse 21

Yup, after looking at the Bentley, it was fuse 21 for me too.

So what is that green connector for? Bentley doesn’t mention anything about it.
