ignition trouble

#1

At Road Atlanta last month I was coming up the hill out of 10B and the car just lost all power. I rolled to a stop in the pits, and it shut off, and would not restart. I just started checking into what happened this weekend. I checked fuel and that seems to be okay. I took the dust cover off the coil, and bingo covered in a dried black ooze. The problem is I put in a new coil and it still won’t fire. I checked and I am getting no spark. So check the coil right. I got the voltmeter out and am getting proper juice to the coil. After I checked the coil I accidentally left the ignition on, and within 5 minutes I could smell the new coil cooking. So another coil fried, and still don’t know what is causing the problem.

You guys got any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

That sounds like it could be a fried DME. Well, that or a short in the wiring from the coil to the DME.

Disconnect the DME and the wire from the coil and check to see if that wire is grounded. If not replace the DME.

not to sound like a moron, but what is the DME?

The computer. Under the passenger side of the dash. You can find them on e-bay for less than 50 bucks. The 173 is the one to get (the part number ends in 173). Not difficult to swap in.

Do a search on DME on this site. Lots of discussion on the topic.
