Ignition Problem?

#1

My 87 runs fairly well. Lately after being on the highway for awhile, it seems to shudder and lose power once it hits some traffic. Once it gets back up to speed it seems to go away. Is this a misfire or maybe detonation? The exhaust manifold heat shield has basically disintigrated so I am thinking the head may be heat soaking and causing detonation. Otherwise car runs okay, 27 mpg and pulls strong through all the gears.

Need to replace the heat shields, new plugs and wires too. Any thoughts?

Sounds like it might be misfiring. There’s not really enough information to be hazard a guess as to it being an A/F or spark problem. By hitting traffic do you mean obstacles to forward progress that result in running at reduced speed? If so does it miss as soon as you reduce speed or only when accelerating back up to highway speed?

What do the plugs look like?

Hit traffic as in slow down from highway speeds. Misfires when accelerating back up to speed. Haven’t checked the plugs yet. Problem goes away after cruising at highway speeds for awhile.

Air flow meter. Swap one with a friend and see if that works for you.
