Ignition Coil mount

After seeing Carlton’s coil come off and now hearing of another failure, I thought it was prudent to let everyone know that this is a known weak point. At least on the E30 M3 it was. The coil is only tack welded on in the engine bay. You need to drill a hole through and put a proper bolt and washer to keep that puppy in place, cheap insurance.

Thanks for this advice Simon. A coil bouncing around the engine compartment can’t be good.

I had mine fail this weekend, and what a pisser to end a weekend like that…Its really easy to run a drill through it and bolt it on…Wish that there were a few warnings about that sort of thing…

I had this happen to my car yesterday. Luckily, I saw Brenden’s warning and did a hacky zip tie job when I was checking the oil. Unfortunately, I wasn’t smart enough to follow up and bolt it down later.

My coil came off and was bouncing around the fender for 2 sessions (qual and the race). It made itself known when the car would randomly stutter and the tach would drop to 0 under full throttle on straights. Bolting the coil down fixed that particular problem.

Again if you haven’t bolted your coil down, you should do so now.
