IE camber plates confusion

#1

A couple of weeks ago, I ordered the IE camber plates but my mechanic was unable to install them on account of the upper spring mount was not the right diameter. He told me that I ordered the wrong plates. I have the spec springs & shocks installed but am unclear on the spring diameters - aren’t they the same as the factory diameter? Or should I have asked for camber plates to fit an aftermarket spring diameter?

So slowly learning … krista

IE has 2 types of plates…the 2" ones for coil-overs and a different set made specifically for the Spec E30

Oh darn it all now, I told them it was for a spec e30 car and now have 2 sets of the wrong, but identical to each other, camber plates. :ermm:

…did u (they) clear this up?..

We were recently sent some of the wrong plates by accident. If you bought these from us please contact me so I can get the right parts too you. It took us a little bit before we realized we had the wrong part and some were shipped out. I know IE had some confusion with us on what we meant by "race" plate or by "spec e30" plate but this has now been solved. If you were affected let me know I can help get you fixed up.

What is the best way to identify the correct plates? Are there images anywhere, or what dimensions are different? The plates have no part numbers that I can find.

Here is a picture of the "race" plates designed for 3" diameter springs typically used with adjustable perch setups.

I posted a picture of them previously in the topic "need ie camber plates quick"
They look the same in the pictures except for the extra piece. The spec e30 ones use the stock perches.

Since we’re on the subject of IE plates - are you guys using the four little spacers provided by IE between the bearing and the perch? These just seemed a little potentially-less-than-adequate to me to act as the upper connecting point between the strut and the chasis. I spoke with Rob on this, who said that one can either use these spacers or replace with a single spacer of similar inside / outside diameters and of thickness equal to those provided en masse (Rob - apologies for paraphrasing our discussion!). I’m thinking of taking route #2, but wanted to throw out the question to see what others are doing. I’m however not looking forward to trying to track down the right sized single-spacer required by route #2, though.

Thanks,

Steve

I see nothing wrong with the spacers the ie plates come with. They are not simply stamped washers. They look to be high quality hard steel. It’s not as if one of them is going to miraculously slip out of position. We use a similiar spacer arrangement on parts of our airplanes. The added cost and complexity of a one piece spacer is not worth it in my opinion. If anything were to be done to improve the system, I believe a slightly larger outside diameter on the bottom washer might be it. that would give a larger bearing area to the perch.
