I want a Stack!

#1

Because of my motor swap, my tach is innaccurate. I haven’t otherwise instrumented yet, so I want

Yeah, it’s kinda pricey, but will take less fab time to install compared to individual gauges(new custom cluster). Comes with a shift light in it and alarms are programmable, you don’t have to change out a sender with a different setting and it’s upgradable to DAQ. B)

The stack does look cool. But for that kind of money you should look at AIM Micron3 XG log. It gives you data logging and track maps along with the dash functions for about a grand. For a little more money try the AIM EVO4 bundled with a micron 3 dash. This gives dash, logging, and gps.

I have this it makes the traqmate look like a calculator watch.

It has data logging, and if you specify predictive lap timing so you can adjust your lines and get real time feedback + / -.

Mine also track throttle position, brake pressure, as well as g-force, plus mechanicals logged like oil press, fuel pressure, battery, oil temp, water temp etc.

Data junkies dream.

Which “this” are you referring to Jim?

I’ve been data logging Throttle Position, Brake On/Off, RPM, Wide Band O2 and Boost on my SC’d Miata with the Traqmate. I have no complaints about what it does except that you only get 5 channels max(RPM is not one of those channels).

In defense of Traqmate, you don’t have pricey senders you have to buy. I find it preferrable to not look at my Traqmate while driving - I’ll focus too long.

Yeah, I’m a data hoarder. B)

A Racepak IQ3 is another option. Kelly Childress and I both have one.

How’s the visibility on the digital display? Do you pick up easily on it? Having old habits, I’m hesitant to depart from a needle tach.

In my opinion, the visibility is excellent. Since the IQ3 has programmable shift lights, that will get your attention, I hardly look at the tach anymore. But even then just a glance will tell me as much as I would have gotten from a conventional gage.

Like other high end digital dash units, you can do some pretty neat things with the IQ3. Like turn on a warning light if the engine is above 3000rpm and oil pressure drops below 30psi Or turn on a light if the the engine temp is above 140F and the 4psi pressure switch I have in the cooling system opens (thus indicating loss of coolant). Those are just examples of warnings I have set in my IQ3, which means that for the most part I don’t have to look at gages at all.

THAT STACK LOOKS KILLER!!!:silly: ALMOST HAVE MY E3.0 BACK SO THAT I CAN START ON THE BUILD!!!B)

So Jim, are you running the IQ3 for just a dash/car monitoring, or are you using it for lap timing/driver analysis too? I’ve found a $650 IQ3 model(vs $1399 model), but something tells me it doesn’t come with sensors. Their sensors look really pricey. I’m trying to figure out how it all works.

With either option, the only sensors I’d have to install are Water & Oil Temps plus Oil Press. With the Stack I’d have to install a wheel speed sensor for Speed. The IQ3 gets its Speed from GPS.

The Stack game plan involves used equipment. Down side of the Stack is that it has to go to the UK for servicing if needed.

I’ve got a Traqmate w/Display and have no complaints against it. I’m really not looking to replace it. I guess what I’m looking for is a way to instrument the car that’s “smarter” than just gauges, easier to install than a bunch of normal gauges(i.e. just 1 intrument panel) and not stupidly expensive.

So Steffen, same ?s I had for Jim for you re the Aim.

How’s the visibility on the digital display? Do you pick up easily on it? Does it take extra time to read?

Here’s some additional thoughts…

Traqmate is working on some kind of big programmable display unit. IIRC correctly they were hoping for an early 2011 release.

SPA makes a line of dual programmable digital gauges. Like oil temp/pressure in the same gauge with integrated programmable warning lights. They’ll also illum an external light. A little slower to read then dial gauges, but I really like programmable warning lights because it cuts down on the # of sensors to plumb. If I was going to redo my gauges, I’d be thinking about SPA.

It would be great if Traqmate would come out with something that had a butt load of channels like some of the other mfgrs.

I don’t have one yet, it is on my wish list. It seemed like Jim had one. I would be interested in his comments.

#14

I have the Stack dash.

I have the Stack display, with predictive lap timing, and I absolutely love it. It’s very easy to ready and offers alerts that aren’t distracting but easy to pick up on. My favorite feature is the predictive lap timing which provides a visual bar below the tach that provides immediate feedback on changes to your driving style. I don’t have the download cable and haven’t tried out the software. My car came with the Stack, but did not come with the cable. A replacement cable is $700 and that’s just a bit steep for me.

#17

Since my whole dash barely works now I want a dash with what is left over after my rebate check.
My speedo is way off, my tach only works 50% of the time, the backlighting on the right side rarely works and I am going to need a transponder. The factory speedometers were designed to read 10% faster than actual so I would like GPS speed assuming it is accurate. I need an accurate tacho and shift light. I need to read OP and water temp of course. The predictive lap timing sounds really cool or F1 qual style sector times in green, yellow, red would be awesome. The AIM and Stack dashes say they have a beacon transmitter/receiver. This is a transponder but not the required one?
I’d like something under 2k.

#18

The Stack will do everything you need, but you’ll need a trackside beacon to take advantage of the predictive lap timing (unless mine or someone else has one trackside) I think they are a bit more thOan 2k… the transponder you need is made by AMB and is different. It provides the track scoring system a unique to your car signal everytime you cross the start finish line.

#19

Finally got my new home owner rebate plus interest. I’m thinking the IQ3 logger dash. I doesn’t say if has predictive lap timing or if it is capable of video overlay. It also looks like I would need to buy every sensor from them. I’m not sure what the V-net thing is all about but some of the sensors are 300$!

Yes it has a predictive lap function. And no, you don’t have to use the V-net sensors. RacePak has a four port Universal Sensor Module that can be used to gather data from most any electrical sensor. The V-net sensors are nice because they are plug-n-play, though they are a bit pricey.
