How to remove the diving board bumpers?

#1

I’m embarrassed to ask this, but how do you unbolt the front diving board (chrome) bumpers? I need to install the motorsports tow strap and a bumper plate filler.

There’s a write up out there, but it’s for the hybrid-bumper 1988 cars and what the author describes doesn’t match with what I see when I look at the car. I feel like it’s a chicken and egg situation – in order to get at the bumper mounts, I need to pull the front spoiler, but in order to pull the front spoiler, I need to pull the bumper.

Thanks!

Hi Dan,
When you say spoiler, I presume that you are talking about air dam (has openings for oil cooler, fog lights, brake ducts). If so you don’t have to remove the bumper in order to remove it. Remove under-tray (the black plastic thing that spans from wheel-well to wheel -well at the front and bottom of the car). It’s held in place by bunch of small fasteners (10 mm I think). Just start at one side and work your way to other. Air dam is held in place in similar fashion. Few bolts on brackets at the front of the car can be a little pain to get to but nothing terrible (don’t forget to disconnect fog lights wiring and outside temp sensor wiring before removing the air dam). Once that is out, you can take the bumper off. There are two shock absorbers at the front, held in place by two bolts per shock. Remove those. Just pull the bumper off. Sides are held in place by couple of bolts on the fender and few bolts by the headlights (don’t forget to disconnect blinker wiring first). That’s pretty much it (it actually might be harder to describe then to do).
HTH,
Igor

As metioned earlier, the air dam must come off in order to get at the bolts holding the bumper to the shocks.

Once the airdam is off, its self-explanatory.
