Im thinking about building a spece30 car and I was wondering how much everyone bought their cars for? Any tips on finding a deal? Where did you west coast guys get your cars?
How much was your car?
I found mine on craigslist http://www.craigslist.org. Well sort of – car was listed on CL, however BMW CCA GGC fellow member brought it to my attention (his acquaintance was selling it).

Four cars purchased:
$900
$900
$1200
$1500
Three were on Craigslist.com, one person heard I was buying and drove it in and asked for $900.
1987 325i 4 door with LSD 75000 miles. Sat for five+ years due to rich doctor syndrome (bought a lexus and just never drove the old BMW again!).
Needed all new rubber parts, A/C, brakes, shocks…hhhmmm all stuff I was replacing anyways!!!
$750.00
Ebayed a ton of stuff that was probably more than the car costs.
They aren’t being advertised. You have to look for them and leave notes.
You have to know all the local BMW repair shops and let them know what you are looking for. People give these away when repair cost soar.

i bought mine (1989 325i 2 door 150k miles) for $350.
it was pretty beat up, but the motor/tranny were in good shape.

Be careful with the low dollar cars…sure you will need to replace alot of things anyway to get it to the track, but finding a well cared for, rust free example will save you money in the long run.
Mine was the exception in low dollar cars.
Doctor just drove the acura more…then the BMW needed a battery, then it was out of inspectin…next thing you know it just sat for years.
So the stuff that was bad was stuff I didn’t need.
But I do agree there is no sense in buying a thrashed and trashed car.

$2,500 for an '87 "iS" in excellent mechanical shape with a mechanical guarantee from my regular mechanic. (Which has already more than paid for the cost of the car itself - broken rocker arm.)
Sold off about $1,000 in interior parts, etc.

amen. if i could do it again, i would have held out for a better (rust free) car.
my car ended up being a bigger headache than i imagined.
since i wanted it to be street legal, i ended up having re-wire almost all the lights.
$3k for an '89is with 212k miles in decent shape. SoCal pricing for you!!
I talked to someone out here in San Diego last week who has an '87 with 180k miles that he wants $1k for, if anyone’s looking.
