if running hood pins, is it legal to remove hinge assembly ?
hood hinge removal legal ??
9.3.13.28. Hood and trunk pins, clips, or positive action external latches are permitted.
9.3.13.28.1. If pins, clips or latches are used the stock releases and components may be removed.
That’s my understanding of the above, that they can – especially since a few cars have removed the hinges… but other than a negligible weight reduction, I don’t see any real advantage in having to lift off your (very heavy) hood every time you open it up, especially since you can run pins and the stock hinges just fine.
I read that rule as saying the latching/release components can be removed, not the hinges so a clarification would be good.
I know some of you have done this. I’m curious as to why since it makes hood removal a pain.
When I put the hood pins in, I retained the hinge and catches from the factory.
The reasons I pulled the stock latch was ease of opening, fear of it sticking/breaking and the fact that it posed a threat of catching on my foot when entering/exiting the car.
Jon MacAvoy removed the hinges on his hood, which meant that anytime he opened the engine compartment, it almost absolutely required two people to get the hood off.
Dan,
how do you install pins when the hood goes down and backwards to close - or did you remove the rollers/guides near the windshield side?
thanks,
bruce

You have to notch the underside of the hood, slightly. I kept the roller guides in place. The holes in the radiator support work perfectly for the Sparco pins, without any need to bore them out.
dont understand why you would need two people to lift it…
i currently dont have the hinge assembly and the hood isnt heavy at all easily removed or proped up from the front…
that’s helpful - thanks Dan

The hinges are considered components of the stock release system.
'Pull them if you’d like.
