Hood & body panel retention pins

#1

I was wondering which hood pin sets the current drivers recommend (I’d like to keep the factory hinges, but remove the factory latch release, if possible).

Also, I’d like to use pins to retain the front spoiler bodywork, as the pre-88-style valance body nuts have long ago disappeared & since installing the brake ducts, the front spoiler is prone to deflection at speed. I think Erle had modified his 318is front spoiler to use pins, if I recall correctly…

I would suggest Dzus clips for the bumper. Summit sells them and the backing plates.

As for the hood pins, I’ve used two sets on my cars and I just went to NAPA and got them. They seem to work, just use lock washers because they’ll get loose after a while. I’ve found the spring loaded style will rust up and fail after a while, and need to be replaced about once every year or two. The pin stil should last longer if they’re not a cheap set, but are heavier.

Just wondering about hood pin placement –

I’ve got a set of the Sparco captive pins and plan to use the holes in the radiator support bracket for mounting them. Unfortunately, with the stock front hinges, it looks like the pins contact the hood at the double-layer of reinforcement at the bottom/front of the hood.

For those of you using hood pins and the stock hinges, did you have to cut out a section of that front reinforcement?

Dan, I used Sparco hood pins and I did have to cut some extra metal from the bottom of the hood. Lining it all up takes a bit of patience, recutting, and filing.

That’s what I thought – time to break out the dremel.

What body nuts…I think I still have a bunch of the front spoiler hardware from my 87 iS

The body nuts on the wheel well edges – any hardware you have would be greatly appreciated… email me a price and a paypal email address (check my profile) and I’ll take them off your hands.

Let me look to see if they still are where I remember them being…If that makes sense…
