High Idle, Oscilation, run on...

Hey guys

This car acts differently every time I fire it up, have checked for vacuum leaks loose grounds…When I first fire it up cold it idles very high, then like a switch is flicked it oscillates to the point of cutting off. When I shut it down it runs on…which could be related to the excessive heat…running out of ideas. Sometimes it cranks up and runs fine, trying to figure if it is temp dependent…

Have you tried a new or known good AFM? The engine shouldn’t surge with a disconnected temp sensor, it just might start/idle rougher than normal since the engine has no idea what to use for stoch since there is no temp value.

Running on at shutdown sounds most like a problem with the electrical system that is running the DME when it should be off. A fuel injected engine can only run on if the DME is providing at least fuel, which it won’t do if it isn’t running.

The idle issues could be any, or a combination, of things. But if the TPS is good and the ICV is clean and good I’d suspect a failing idle control module (this being and ETA).

Have you ohmed your injectors? Would hanging injectors promote “dieseling”?

I found part of the problem, the fuel was contaminated with water, the car was running very lean at idle…I posted earlier about the heat from the exhaust… the plugs were completely white. I think the ICV is screwed up, I unplugged it and the idle smoothed out.

Come on dude - I know you’re trying to save money but putting water in the fuel is no way to make it last longer…
