Help replacing rear brake rotor

#1

I’m replacing my pads and rotors and so far things are going quite smoothly, with one exception. I’m having a bugger of a time getting the new rear rotor over the brake shoes for the parking brake. I’ve adjusted the parking brake shoes so they are as retracted as they can go, but I cannot get the new rotor to on the hub.

The easy thing to do would be to remove the parking brake. However, I would rather keep it as it makes it easier for me to get my car in the trailer and also provides more resistance to movement in the trailer during transit (and adds just a little bit of backup in the case of a brake failure). The shoes and related assembly do seem to have a little play in them, about 5mm or so. I’m not sure if this is normal. Are there any tricks to getting the rotor on, or is just a case of doing a lot of wriggling and cursing?

Thanks!

Andy

Make sure you dont have the parking brake on

Loosen the adjustment screws up by the parking brake handle.

IIRC the adjuster on my parking brake was binding and wouldn’t fully retract to allow the new rotor to go over the new parking brake shoe.

Take out the adjuster if you can, take it apart, clean and lube it and put it back on. Other than that just wiggle the shoes around a bit.

One thing NOT to do is take the shoes off and try driving with the parking brake cable still in the hub( ask me how I know)

Thanks! I had to stop for the day to attend to more mundane things but I’ll give that a try tomorrow morning.
