Help - I might just burn it to the ground

#1

I have a 90 that I built into a spec and took to the track for the first time. Alittle history, the speedo, tach, gas gauge and temp gauge quit working, so I replaced with a Auto meter tach and oil & water gauges. Tha car runs great until you get to about 4-5000 rpm, then you get a cut-off. I mean it falls flat, the rpm lowers, runs, and falls flat again. Every gear you get the same symptom. I assumed it was fuel, replace pump, regulator, no improvement. It has new plugs, rotor, and cap. I realized I did not have the idiot light hooked up to charge fully and installed a new one in my new dash pod. No change. Anyone have any ideas???

try swapping the afm or tps with known good parts?

I’m the “poster child” for this sort of problem…

When the engine falters do you see the tach take a serious drop? Seeing that would imply that the DME is loosing power/ground, or it is losing its timing reference signal. If the tach doesn’t experience a large drop the fuel system is suspect. You can call me at 256-603-7386 for more advice

Were the plug wires changed at the same time?

We changed out the AFM with another car, no luck. No the plug wires were not changed out, but they look good and there are no leaks when the lights are out. Remember, this is not a miss, but a complete out. It’s like it runs out of fuel at a certain RPM.

I had wires that looked OK but were arcing at certain RPM’s. Changed the wires and presto, no more issues.

There may be small cracks or worn areas inside of the loom.

I just pulled my harness apart for a MegaSquirt conversion and found several problems. BMW likes to use splices within the harness and these splices sometimes fail…mine did. I had a cut out at the ARRC that probably cost me a podium finish. When I removed the factory armor from the harness, I had a ground splice loose plus an injector splice. Don’t have to worry about that any more:huh: Chuck

I finally got it. It was a bad ECU, a friend had one that I swapped out and presto, it ran all the way to redline. I have never seen one act like that, but it fixed it. Thanks for all the advice.
