Hello! I probably should have posted here a while but I’ve been dealing with electrical gremlins for sometime and have only now achieved victory.
Well I’m now on my fourth engine after blowing each of them up on several track events, but I have yet to replace my manual transmission that has over 235k on it and now it’s near death. If anyone has a manual transmission available please message me. I’m going to be driving HPDE2 Solo at VIR next weekend and if someone could bring it to the track I’d be very grateful.
who has a toasted one with a good bell housing? I have a gear train I think is good but someone had …shall we say…Installed the tranny in such a way tht the tourque busted the bell at the mounting holes
I think you’ve found your tranny, if you can pull the bell off your existing gearbox – if it’s got 200k+ on it & nearly shot, no one’s gonna buy it, anyway.
well I have a good one in the wrecked car, and this other one that is cracked in the shed…I am pretty sure the geatset is good so I really don’t feel like buying a good one, I was hoping to stumble upon the …"come get it out of my garage…" deal I probably just won’t do anything until I have to. (Famous last words)
Thanks for the replies! I’m in the process of talking to the guy with the "conversion kit" on ebay, but freight is going to be a bit much for me.

You’ve blown four engines!?! :S
And you’re only in HPDE2?!?
(Meaning that racing isn’t an excuse…) :ermm:
No offense, but maybe you ought to consider an automatic… [/quote]
I didn’t actually blow the engines up. The car initially had an m20 b27 engine in it that i ran into the ground before the next m20 b25. Then I ended the life of that engine with a cracked head at 235k+, and then settled on a nice b25 with 180k+ which gave up last time on track with a broken rocker arm. Now I’m with a b25 engine that has 130k on it without any issues at all.

Sadly I have one with all the necessary parts for an auto conversion…

I was debating about rebuilding my current transmission, but since my e30 is my only vehicle at the moment I really don’t want to put myself out of commission for too long…
Alex has a 5-spd transmission that is sitting outside his garage (20815 zip code) that is free to anyone who will haul it away. He suspected that it was making noise, whirring, and rattling at high speeds, but I think it was likely his driveshaft.
He replaced the tranny after having really bad wobbling at high speeds, and also reman’ed his driveshaft. The wobbling got a lot better, but I suspect that the driveshaft was the culprit. Alex will argue that it was the tranny.
In any case, if you want to risk it, I’d say it’s 50/50 that it’s in good shape. It’s from an "e" car but will work fine on both e’s and i’s.
Yeah, I don’t think you are going to get too many "its free, and good, come just take it out of my garage" with these Getrags. When they go, they seem to go for a pretty penny, I had done some research in the past on them. And, there does not see like too many people that know how to really take them apart and rebuild them. I know Steve Beckmeyer has a few busted Getrags up at his shop, just laying in a field or something, but they do not ever bother trying to take them apart and fix them, they say you need a jig to separate the guts from the case, then other bunches of specialized tools to get them disassembled and back together–though, I don’t really know, cause I have never tried, maybe they are just blowing smoke up my ===.
