Height of \"diving board\"

#1

Can someone tell me the distance between the bumer and the bottom of the diving board spoiler? I have an '87 325is and it didn’t come with a spoiler on the car when I bought it. I’ll be fabricating one this w/e and I would like to know how tall the stock one is for reference.

Thanks!

IIRC, the bottom of my spoiler is ~3", with the SpecE30 suspension in place.

You can always use the Han Ah-Sue method of ensuring proper spoiler clearance: fabricate an air dam that just clears the pavement and let the track surface "adjust" it for you.

Digging up an old thread…Eric, is the air dam in your profile photo the one you made? Mine is cracked badly and I checked local used parts place but they want $200 or a replacement. I was thinking of fabbing something with HDPE plastic formed around the shape of the valance as I read on an earlier thread you posted your 944. I’m wondering if there was anything you needed to do to provide support or reinforcement to the back or did you just bolt it to the metal valance? Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

I did one with HDPE. Look at mike davidsons car. It has been curbed and abused and still holds up. There are no supports around the back.

Two tricks:

While bending the corners use a heat gun to make your life easier.

mount the air dam then tape it off and trim it with a sawzall…drive hard…trim again.

Good stuff that HDPE!!!

Great, thanks. I can’t wait to get started on mine and will post photos later.
