Heat radiating into cabin

#1

It seems that I’m getting high heat levels radiating into the interior from what feels like the transmission tunnel. From the cig lighter area is very warm to all the way where the rear ashtray is. The trans (85 325e) ends at roughly the area where the most heat is (3" above the shifter) but it doesn’t explain the heat all the way back.

Is this just me or a common E30 issue with the inline 6?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

are ypur exhaust heat shields in place?

Yah, it is.

Is this a common issue?

Yes it’s common.

There is also an insulation around the transmission but on most old cars, it may not be there any more.

The carpet and the foam underneath really does the most job in keeping the heat out of the cabin. Once they are gone, it’s an oven.

I had the same question.I removed the heat shields on my car a while back and now after running 10mins or so I can’t even hold my hand on the tunnel for more than 3-5 secs.

Like csrow said it is a common issue.
