Head & Neck Restraint Recommendations

#1

Is anyone on the list using a restraint system and would care to comment on it?

I’m not yet racing, but I am doing DE instruction, so in the course of a weekend I will be in multiple cars.

I’m somewhat familiar with HANS, and was leaning that way, but a friend was talking about the R3 restraint, which I had not heard of, and was pretty high on it. Looks like MSRP is around $950.

Adding to my list of expenditures that I HOPE were complete wastes of $$ (in that they’ll never be utilized)…

I just drilled the holes in my helmet & mounted the bolts for a HANS device last night. I tried it on, climbed in the car, & hooked up the belts. It didn’t seem uncomfortable or overly restrictive, unless you need to turn your head more than 15 degrees to the side. And in my rather silly attempts to simulate a forward-impact it seemed that the thing should in fact stop my head.

I’ll be wearing the HANS this weekend up at Infineon, and will let you know my thoughts on it next week. (Hopefully I won’t have any basis for commenting on whether they are effective or not!!)

I haven’t heard of the R3 system you refer to.

I beleive HMS motorsports is selling the Hans for less than the R3 you mention, which must be new to the market. The Hans has be tested to the N’th degree. I’d stick with what all the Pros are using…

I use a HANS. Its expensive but cheaper than a basilar skull fracture.

I’m buying a HANS next week.

Any suggestions on the model (I know there are a few different types) and who to call with my order?

Carter,

I just went directly to HANS. You don’t or at least you didn’t have to go through a supplier. The tech guys at HANS will ask you a few questions including what the incline of your seat is and your neck size to get the proper model and fit.

I’d just call them at 1-888-HANS-999

hope this helps

Thanks Brain.

I’m ordering mine tomorrow (Wednesday). I tried to order it today on the phone but they told me the required waiver is on the website so that’s the easiest way to order it.

Ordered mine from HANS today. I got the 20M which should fit just fine, according to their instructions. I didn’t get the quick release because a friend said doesn’t have the quick release and he gets out of his Honda Challenge Integra just fine, and our window/door opening should be even bigger than his.

Which one did you get?

I didn’t get the quick release. Getting out of a sedan with it on isn’t a problem. It does take alittle getting used to…Limited neck movement from side to side with it on, but after a few sessions you won’t even notice it

hope this helps
