Head Bolts

#1

My M20 still has the Hex head head bolts. I know that BMW has
a new head bolt that has a torx head and I’ve read the replacement
procedure. I’m thinking that since my car already has approx. 200,000
on the odo that maybe I should just leave well enough alone.

Thoughts?

I did this on my 87 iS many moons ago because I did not want to have the failure…it isn’t terribly hard but you should buy the angle torque guage. Autozone sells one for about 20.00 bux or so.

I would like to hear Dave Pallister answer this one.

My suggestion,if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Replace the bolts with the newer style torx bolts when you’ve got good reason to take off the cylinder head. Spend the money you would have used on the bolts and a new gasket(s) on seat time. Regards, Robert ( we’re slower in the Southeast Region) Patton

Concur with Patton’s recommendations. The engine in my car turned 269k last weekend at Road Atlanta. Hopefully it’s got a few years worth of racing still in it.
