Have you liked your clutch selection?

What is the best clutch for se30 in your opinion?

I’d love to hear from people; what clutch do you have, and do you like it?

#2

Honestly, there is really no reason to use anything other than the stock clutch, unless your trying to save weight, but thats money. These motors do not make enough HP to slip the stock clutch and if yours is slipping, it needs replacing. I have been running the stock assembly on both my cars and they are just fine, and i am not nice to my clutches at all, especially with standing starts. The only way i would pay for anything other than stock is if it was cheaper than stock.

just my thoughts

I’ve used a stock, ClutchMasters Stage 1, and a Spec Stage 3. Of those I prefer the Spec clutch.

#4

I have heard good things about the clutchmasters, is there anything you did not like about it in particular?

Do you know if the spec is the lightest of those three?

The ClutchMasters disengaged very low as compared to the Spec, which is rather more like a stock clutch in that regard. I like either over the stock because of the shorter engage/disengage distance.

I don’t know what the relative weights are.

#6

if your deciding factor is engagement length, just put a <5 dollar clutch stop in there and adjust it so as soon as you move the pedal out its engaging. i had this on my street car for a while and it was great, also funny to watch people stall when they tried to drive it after professing how good of a driver they were!

All I’m getting at is that i personally don’t see any reason to spend money on a clutch unless your going for weight reduction.

I have the spec stage 3+ in the turbo car. I’m not sure how similar it is to the stage 3 but it is not something I would not want to use if I didn’t need it. I think its rated at 650 ftlbs maybe more and its like one leg pressing 100lbs. When I get stuck in traffic I limp for the rest of the week.

#8

I use the stock clutch with a clutch stop, and I see no reason to change it.

#9

The stage 3 clutch isn’t much stiffer than the stock clutch. I have no problems driving the car on the street in stop and go traffic.

That misses the point slightly. The problem I had with the Clutchmasters was how close to the floor the pedal had to go to disengage. I had a clutch stop then and I have one now. The difference is in how much motion is required to reach the disengage point.

Oh i did miss that. that would be a problem indeed

Wasn’t there an exedy contingency last year. One of the southeast events I was at there was a gift certificate for a clutch given to someone running exedy stickers. Can’t find anything about it lately. Did I imagine it?

#12

Whatever clutch BMW installed in my car 25 years ago!!

#13

Stock - have run in both cars for the last 5 years. Regarding Exedy, IIRC it was $100 cash however they do make an OEM replacement pressure plate/disc for E30. We buy the Sachs kit from Bimmerworld.

Who sells spec clutches for the e30. The only place I’ve found is horsepowerfreaks. I can’t remember where I bought mine.

#15

Go to http://www.specclutch.com/dealers and plug in your state to find local dealers.

#16

I tried that. I meant online dealers. The 2 dealers in wisconsin don’t have websites and are probably mustang/camaro shops.

#17

You can buy directly from SPEC…at least people in B’ham have. They now have an aluminum core PP to go with their 3 puck ceramic unsprung disk…highly recommended. Chuck

#18

This sounds like the way to go as long as it fits into the rules.

I found the Exedy OEM type clutch for about 180 and the regular stage 3 for 450, so if cost is not an issue then yes.

Buying a spec stage 4 tomorrow. It’s the same as the 3 but unsprung and slightly cheaper. Does the aluminum PP cost more? I couldn’t find an option for it so I’ll have to call. I’m going to order it from horsepowerfreaks. Their 24/7 phone ordering is actually 9 to 5 ordering.
