Harnesses - opinions on what to get?

#1

Right now I am looking at the G-Force 6 pt Camlock harness in pull down config. Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions for anything different? I know this is a preference question but I have never used a 5/6 pt harness before and I don’t want to get something I’ll hate. The seats are going to be Corbeau FX1 Pro. I’m about 5’9", 165lb. I plan to buy new and the best price I’ve found is about $135. Thanks guys!

I am very happy with my Impact belts. they are a little pricier up front but i just got a set recertified for $90, I sent them the old ones and they sent me a new set for $90.00. Great quality and it only took about a week. I like the g-force belts but I dont think they recertify so once they go out of date your done with em…

I recently had occasion to test Crowe 6 points at the tire wall/jersey barrier at VIR at speed. Very comfortable & I’m glad they were 6 point.

the good thing about the G-force ones is that they are FIA rated so they are good for longer than the stupid 2 year rule on SFI only belts.

I’ve used camlock and latch/link types and, without having any great reasons, I prefer the latch/link and they’re cheaper too.

Pulling down on the lap belts is a bit of a pain in the tight space, but I’ve also tried pull-up lap belts (Crow brand) and they interfered with where the belt comes through the side of the seat, so that didn’t work out.

Willans 6-Point 3" Belts. Nothing better, period. FIA Certified, excellent adjusters, available in a number of variations and weights.

Can’t recommend them highly enough, and work really well with my Schroth HANS Device.

G force does have a recertification program. Check their website. Don’t quote me, but I think it was $60.

I have this system and it’s fine. I’d be interested in looking at the “pull up” design, because my waist adjustment buckles are in a bad place. But G-Force’s pull up design is SFI not FIA, and that’s a problem.

I’d also be interested in looking at a 2" waistbelt design. They are supposed to be better but they seem to be a lot more expensive.

If I had a HANs I’d get the 2" shoulder straps.

I have an Impact belt system for my passenger seat. It’s the design with the spring loaded adjusters that prevent loosening. And boy do they do that.

I think that the thinner you are, the tougher it is to find a belt system that has an easily adjustable waist strap. If you are a big guy the waist strap adjusters maybe could be in the seat with you. That would make them easier to adjust. I’m skinny so my adjusters are outside my seat in the cramped 2" of space between seat and belt mount. And that’s a hard place to get any adjusting done.

What I’ve had to do is adjust the waist tight and then use racer tape to prevent any slippage. Therefore I don’t adjust them and they don’t slip. But it makes them a little hard to get on.

The bottom line is that there are a lot of little things that makes a strap system work well. And some of the variables have nothing to do with the strap. If you possibly can, go sit in some other guy’s cars and see how their waist belts work. And consider where you wantthe waist belt adjuster to end up, and how the waist belt fastening point is going to impact the position of that adjuster.

The shoulder straps would seem to be infantry simple but I had to weld a bar on to my cage horiz crossbar in order to raise the shoulder straps. Now that my shoulder straps are truly horiz my driving position is a lot more comfortable. Shoulder straps that slope down a little not only shove your HNR into your shoulders, but also scrunch you down in your seat.

The Schroth harnesses I have are adaptable to pull up or pull down. I had to get them because the G-forces I had ran out of adjustment room before they were tight on me. I’m roughly your same size. Alot of it had to do with the Racetech seat I had though. I have G-force harness on the passenger side in a Cobra seat and it works fine.

I’ve been really happy with my Crow belts. I’ve been using them since 2003 when I raced in GTI-Cup and have them in my SpecE30 now. I like the fact that the belts are Made-in-the-USA (I think all of G-Force’s stuff is imported from Asia). Crow will recertify their belts for only $45 plus shipping. I sent mine in last year and had them back within 10-days and they looked brand spanking new. The bonus part is when you email Crow with a question, Fred Crow himself answers it (3 out 3 with my emails). It’s a well run company IMO. We need more outfits like Crow Enterprises.
