Harness trick (from the 24 hours of Daytona)

#1

I noticed an interesting and simple modification while watching this year’s 24 Hours of Daytona – a couple of the DP teams had strung a length of surgical tubing from the cabin roof to a loop of tubing wrapped around the shoulder belts of their harness, above the adjustment buckle. This keeps the harness belts within reach when getting into the car and pulls them out of the way when the lock is released (especially handy when trying to get out the car quickly with a HANS on.

For all I know, this may be a well-known trick, but it’s the first I’d seen of it.

Model airplane fuel hose works well too.

Dan,

Curious - did they attach the tubing on the roof behind the seat, so they weren’t in view by the driver when strapped in?

They were slightly forward of the plane of the shoulder and to the outside of the seat… but it was hard to tell given that I was relying on in-car cameras for the view.

Dan:

This trick has been around for a long time. Good spot though.

I tried it in my car for a while but it ended-up being a pain. And since we’re almost alays doing sprints, it’s not an issue.

I do, however, use the tubing to keep my crotch strap from falling through the seat hole.

Carter, crotch control…did the rules say you could do it? Just havin fun. I’ll not be at VIR but hope to see you art Road Atlanta. The spec e30 taxi cab will be ready by that date. Regards, Robert Patton

Robert:

Crotch control is very important! And worth at least 2 seconds per lap.

I’m sorry to hear that you won’t be at VIR and I just found out that I have a family conflict during the Road Atlanta race. I hate it because RA is one of my favorite tracks.

Depending on the schedule, I might try to get there in August.
