Halfshaft ?s

#1

I started to install my halfshafts and noticed that one of them felt pretty crunchy. So I decided to just throw some remans in. Then the Soap Opera began.

My car is an '86 “e” model. I’ve installed an LSD from a '87 “is” car.

I’ve noticed that there are different halfshaft P/Ns between the various 86, 87 & 88 years as well as models. I guess I just want to confirm interchangebility between years and models.

Anyone in the know about such?

Thanks,

I asked the same question a few weeks back and the consensus was that they are interchangeable between all ABS equipped 325 models. That still doesn’t explain the various part numbers. I’m still curious what makes them different.

If they feel crunchy I would first disassemble the CV joints and inspect for wear. If they look OK (i.e. no burnt bearings, deep grooves, etc) you may only need to clean, regrease, and replace the boots. Could save a lot of money as remans aren’t exactly cheap. Following is a good DIY for doing this. Applies to an E36, but the procedure is nearly identical for an E30.
