GRAND SLAM weekend at Pocono

#1

OK, so who all is planning on being there, either racing or DEing? One weekend, 5 different track layouts. If you’re doing DE, Friday gives you a ridiculous amount of track time, almost to the point that you have to skip sessions (if I remember correctly). I’ll be driving (hopefully away from the walls  ) on Saturday and Sunday but will be at the track kind of early on Friday to pick up some tires from Phil who’s only going to be there one day.

Going to be an interesting weekend, first event for the NE with vendors, entertainment and camping.

I am trying to go, but it just doesn’t look like I am going to make it

#3

still trying to make the DE,

new Controls arms are in ( Damn those inner ball joints are a PITA)
Spec Front shocks and springs are in
Camber plates are in
1 tie rod is done
new tires mounted and Balanced

Left to do before i will register
Other tie Rod
Timing belt
Water pump
Rear suspension
Alignment

I have all the parts, just not the time. I have a wedding this weekend that is really hampering my plans. don’t have wedding on July 4th weekend with a big track day coming up. i have wrenches to turn

#4

I’ll be there all three days. Anyone know if campsite is open on Thursday night?

Will be there spectating. Currently builiding car. I’ll stop by and say hi. Built and sold 89 325is. Now buliding 318is. Do any guys run 318is’? Thanks

The weekend started out pretty good. Got the car finished up on Tuesday and it felt perfect (maybe even better than before the crash). Christian and myself represented spec-e30 in the race group in the scorching heat on Saturday with Christian picking up a bunch of time after softening up his rear bar a bit and allowing him to get the power down better. I also did the 1 hour enduro that night, that was pretty rough. With the heat and having already done a full race day and no cool shirt, I was real tired at the end. But it was super fun and I picked up the win in the E2 class.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much where the fun ends. On Sunday morning, Christian was faced with a diff that didn’t want to keep its’ fluid in it and a gas tank that was potentially doing the same, he packed it in to race another day. Then in qualifying my engine decided it had enough of being healthy lost power and started knocking. The single infield long course is pretty close to full throttle for close to a minute with 2 high speed left hand turns. In the main bowl turn, oil pressure was OK but the 2nd left is a faster turn and at 120mph with concrete walls next to me, I didn’t check my gauges. So it’s back to work on the car again.

All in all, it was a fun weekend though. Hanging out at the track is almost always good even when things don’t go perfect.

sounds like fun despite the issues. i was planning to be there for the DE but did not make it. planning to build my car for spec e30 over the winter and hopefully race sometime in '09.

Sean,

Congratulations on the E2 class win. It was good to see the #99 back and racing again after its intimate encounter with the wall. Hope the engine issues are not terminal.

Sean, glad to hear you got the car fixed. Bad news on the knock I guess. What did it sound like, bottom end? Looking forward to coming back up north.

The knocking is coming from the bottom end, so maybe a bearing? Not sure. Cylinders 5 and 6 are down on compression though, so the issues are big ones unfortunately. If I can find a block quick, I’ll just replace it and repair the head if it needs anything, if not I guess I’ll try to have this block rebuilt, the bottom end had 215K+ on it, so it isn’t a huge surprise. Hopefully I’ll get it all fixed up for Summit next month, I’ll be bummed if I miss summit twice in a row because of something that happened at pocono
Was good to see a bunch of you guys there that are building cars, can’t wait to you’re all racing.

Adam, here are those traqmate files you wanted (or anyone else that might want them). Hopefully they work [file name=Traqmate_Pocono_Double_infield.zip size=343989]http://spece30.com/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/files/Traqmate_Pocono_Double_infield.zip[/file]

Thanks for posting the file. Now I gotta try and figure out what any of it means…

Sean:

Any chance you’ll make Summit this month?

I just picked up a replacement engine the other day, so as long there aren’t any major issues with getting it in I should be there. Looking forward to driving on the most recent repaving.

#14

was at summit last weekend and the pavement is in a sorry state… T1, T5, T6 is pretty much washboard…

#15

Supposedly (and hopefully) they were going to re-re-repave those turns yesterday, so maybe we’ll get lucky and it’ll be good

i hope it’s fixed properly. they did do a repair job right before we got there but that got torn up pretty quick.

Sean had a great race on Sat. showing amazing car control. Had the car completely sideways looking ahead out driver’s window, saved it, only to pass a Shelby Cobra in the same turn the next lap.

sounds awesome? video? how was the track condition?
