I screwed up and took the head from my “warrantied” engine to a head builder.
He says 3 exhaust valves are bent and the other 3 don’t have enough edge material for the valve job.
Since I’ve torn the engine down to reseal and get the head reman’d I guess I’m screwed warranty wise, so I might as well follow through with the head job. If the bottom is good like I think it is, I’m hoping to end up with a good, competitive engine.
My builder says I need all new rockers & pivot tubes, valve guides plus the afformentioned exhaust valves.
Buying the above parts is over $1000 from BMW - ouch.
He says sometimes Febi rockers are good, sometimes not. It’s like a quality of the year issue with them. He has another race head he’s building this weekend and he’ll advise me how the Febi rockers are looking these days.
That leaves the valves. He swears by nothing but BMW OEM valves from the dealer at $50/ea. Zowch! What manufacturer are the BMW OEM valves? Pelican has Intervalve brand @ $24/ea. Alleuropeanautoparts.com has TRW valves @ $40.09/ea. Eeuroparts.com has Febi exhaust valves @ $20.90/ea. I’m sure there are other manufacturers/prices out there.
What valve manufacturer(s) should I stick with for reliability & longevity? Who would those suppliers be?
Crappy valves can ultimately cost me a good bottom end, so I hate to skimp there. However, I am trying to keep my expense for 6 exhaust valves, 12 rockers, 2 rocker tubes, 5 eccentrics and 12 valve guides below $600.
TIA for some good advice.
