Gear oil change

#1

Changing out the gear oil in the trans. Any tips on how to pump in the new fluid?

I got a long hose and ran if from the fill hole, out and up from underneath the rocker. Stood next to the car and squeezed about 2 quarts of fluid into the hose and tranny till it started to run out on the floor. Messy, but worked.

If you have a harbor freight nearby (or even autozone or something) they have a cheap fluid pump that works for this. hose on one end extracts the fluid from the bottle, hose on other end pushes it into the gearbox.

If you use royal purple the cap has a nozzle that you can put a hose on and squeeze it in. This was really slow. I have also used a suction gun. I would be surprised if the plastic pump you put on top of the jug could handle the stress of pumping cold gear oil.

Buy the cheap fluid pump from your local parts store and then find a jug that the top actually screws onto and use that. The one I got works great on a gallon jug of Redline, so I just fill the jug up with the fluid I need to pump and pump it in. I would recommend Redline MTL for the tranny.

I use a funnel with a long piece of hose; INSIDE the car remove the shifter boot, and feed the hose down through the hole into the fill plug of the gearbox.

But I got the best results when I drained the gearbox off the car, then used a 0.5L fill of Castrol VMX80 with some shaking (not too strenuous) then draining, then filled with Motul Gear 300 75W-90 100% Synthetic. Nothing but sweetness since then!

I loosened the upper bolt, and there is a grommet on the passenger side forward on the trans tunnel that comes out, and its almost a straight shot down to the fill hole. I had a buddy under the car to direct the hose, I put a 2 foot long piece of standard hose on the Royal Purple bottle, and just gently squeeze it in the trans. I didn’t lose a drop.

Hope this helps.

You should have lost some drops as you fill it till it starts coming out, haha.
