Gas guage -

In trying to figure out why the ABS wasn’t working on my car, I took out the dashboard display. Sure enough the ABS light was totally disconnected. Cool. Let me snag another socket & lamp. I took the one that was plugged into the one with the circle arrow icon (any idea what that means??). I took the car for a quick spin and the ABS appears to be working. SWEET!

Now I notice that the gas gauge isn’t working. When I turn the ignition on, the needle doesn’t move like it used to. It does nothing, but when I start the car, the needle moves to a position, then it quickly falls back down. Did something get jacked up when I removed the display?

I haven’t had a chance to revert back to the previous configuration. Has anyone else seen this problem?

I can tell you that with my gauge cluster I have to tap the temp gauge to get it to work. I also have to tap it to get all the gauges to light up at night when I turn the headlights on. This reminds me what is the procedure for the ABS light when you start the car? Should it light up quickly and then turn off if it is working properly?

The problem with the gas gauge turned out being a flown fuse. #10, a 7.5 fuse.

I think the gas gauge was the only thing that worked decently in my cluster. That is why I got the IQ3. If your eventually going to spend a grand on data acquisition with gps you might as well spend a few hundred more and get a digital dash with it. My first time at road atlanta I was hitting the braking zone for 10a at 120mph in an e30 with nothing done but the shocks, springs and worn out all-season tires. Since a few other people racing spece30 are at 108 there either I am awesome and the stock speedo is only 10% off or the stock speedo is completely worthless since I couldn’t be going anywhere near that fast with a junkyard motor and 640 treadwear all-seasons. My tach also jumped back and forth ± 1k of what I was actually at and the right side of the cluster wouldn’t light up. I currently have 2 clusters you could maybe scavenge from but they are crapped out as well and one is from an E.

My tach gave up the ghost long before I owned the car, so I depend on a shift light. The speedo is way off, no surprise there. It was showing 120+mph going up the esses at VIR. Right!!! More like 105-110mph.

I’d love to replace the dash with some fancy, but it’s hard to justify. Right now the only thing I depend on is the Gas guage. I have autometer oil/temp/pressure & water temp.

Just fill up after every session. If you start running low on fuel, you’ll know it because of fuel starvation. I don’t have a gas guage in my car and never have any problems with fuel. Typically, my car consumes 4 to 6 gallons of fuel depending on the session length.

For enduros having the gas gauge appears to be pretty helpful.

Really? I would think the gauge to be pretty inaccurate at lower fuel levels on the track… But again, my car doesn’t have a fue gauge so what do I know.
