Fuel level sender and driveshaft question

#1

Didn’t know where else to post this, so here it is -------

  1. Is the reference voltage to the fuel level sender 12 volts, or something less?

  2. Looking to remove the harmonic balancer on the trans output shaft. I appears that the drive shaft yoke will bolt right to the output shaft yoke. Is that correct?

  1. I think you’re referring to the guibo. Is it legal to remove it? Secondly… Why?

Don’t know, and because with a short shifter the shift arm rubs. I have bent the arm, but is just so little clearance. Just considering choices. If it isn’t legal, then that solves the problem !!!

The balancer can, and should, be removed.

The level sensor(s) is powered by system voltage (12.7-~14v).

9.3.12.9. The vibration damper may be removed.

Looks like you’re in luck!!

PERFECT. Thanks so much.

BTW, I race a Saturn Sky Redline in SCCA Solo. As helpful as the BMW community has been through my work on a friend’s Spec E30 project, the Kappa (platform - Sky and Solstice) is equally unhelpful. A shame for the Kappa, and true benefit for E30s.

The guibo should not be removed - it prevents shock loads to the differential. The vibration dampener is a separate item that can be removed.

Okay, somebody needs to define “guibo” and “vibration damper”. I know about the v.d. on the crankshaft. What I am looking at is a transmission output shaft yoke with three bolt holes, a (~6-8" diameter) cup shaped doodad bolted to that, and a driveshaft yoke (with the same bolt pattern as the output shaft yoke) that is bolted to the inside of the cup shaped thingy.

The guibo, or “flexdisk” is part #2 in this picture. It’s rubber and about an inch thick. And it needs to stay in place so tranny and driveshaft can go off-axis a bit. If yours is likely as old as your car, I’d replace it.

Item #3 is the vibration damper. It can be removed. It could or will interfere with an aftermarket shift kit.

I am working on an 88 325is. I recall seeing #3, but not #2. The car is back on stands, so I will look at it again in the AM.

Are there two different drive line set ups? any advantage to either?
