Fuel injector care

#1

I’ve been meaning to give my fuel injectors some attention for quite awhile now. They are the originals that came with the car and I suspected they needed a good cleaning

After looking on the internet for info on the best way to go about it I found that I had a few options.

  1. buy new ones @ $50 a piece
  2. Send out my current injectors to be cleaned/reconditioned @ $30 a piece
  3. Clean them my self for free.

I decided to go with option 3.

I was right about the injectors needing some attention. The gunk that I got to come off/out of them was shocking. The project was really easy and didn’t take much time at all. (about 1 hour total)

Here’s the link to the Pelican forum that has a good article on how to do it. I also referenced my bently manual (ch.6, pg 20-21)

Total cost when I was done $1.85 for a can of brake cleaner

$30 per injector is a bit on the steep side. These guys,http://cruzinperformance.com/fuelinj.html , will do it for about half that (no affiliation, etc.)

I cleaned injectors on my daily driver while back, using brake cleaner as well, but I made a ‘rig’ with 9V battery to actuate injectors. (I do think that next time I will send out injectors to be professionally cleaned and reconditioned though).

I have to agree with Igor.

Having them professionally tested is the best way to go.

Elephantmotorsports has sent numerous people to cruzin and they have all been satisfied with the results and price.

Can’t go wrong with your overall cost though…

I too used cruzin performance when I put my M10 back together and I recommend them highly

Thanks for the post Brain.

I hadn’t thought about this but am thinking now…especially with 256K on the engine.

Carter,
I will give you my spare set to send off to have done if you want…and you can give me your old ones when they come back…that is what I did for chris, that way a set is in the car and a set is being cleaned.

Carter and I plan on cleaning ours using the do it yourself method. I happen ot have an utrasonic cleaner. I would think this would get them to look like new. Anyone have any thoughts on using an ultrasonic cleaner to do the job.

Also, I spoke with Brain about his injector cleaning job and his o-rings are fine. However, Carlton ordered enough O-rings for both our cars for the Wednesday cleaning just because we’re getting close to the race weekend and I don’t want to take any chances on tearing one, discovering some old and cracked o-rings, etc., and not having spares.

the pintle caps should be replaces as well

If the injectors have been in there since the car was born, they will be pretty difficult to get out.
