In the process of doing my control arms, another "while I’m in there" job is the control arm bushings. I’ve read on here that the Powerflex are highly unlikely to fit my replacement arms, so they are out. Are there any other alternatives worthwhile, or are we all using oem replacements?
And on that subject, the Bentley installation procedure for these involves ‘BMW Special Lubricant’ and the ability to put the freshly pressed-on bushings right into the car to preload them. That will be difficult for me to do in my no-press-in-sight shop. Important or no? Alternative solution? Aftermarket bushings require this procedure or no?

Go with delrin or aluminum bushings. They are precision fit so they slip right in with minimal effort. You only need to get a shop to press out the existing rubber ones.

You could go with these - they have delrin + carbon fiber plates

Bimmerworld and/or Turner has offset delrin bushings. I tried the powerflex and did not have good luck with them. I used to have the treehouse racing ones also, but have to say prefer delrin over all of the above.

I used some offset poly bushings from bavauto. Seemed to work fine, got a couple of AX and one DE weekend on them with no issues. I used the Powerflex first, not recommended.
Good luck
