For when they get back from Nationals

I know Carter has told us that there was going to be an exhaust inspection at Mid Ohio, and from that, the rules would be clarified for next year as to what is kosher.

Other things I hope will be clarified…

This is about gauges and if we are allowed to replace the center vents with additional gauges. I think that thread was left with "we’ll get back to you". I think if that is allowed, a rule change will need to be made.

Also, from looking at the pictures on the web, I’d love to know what class we run - SE30, SpecE30 or SO. Looks like the cars are equally divided between the groups. Just want to do it once, right.

Great action photos. Mid Ohio was my home track for years - looks like great weather so far (knock knock).

Can’t answer the rules questions, but as far as the class- it’s all the same.

SpecE30 = SE30

SO indicates the "faster" division within spec E30 which consists of 325i’s and 318i (M42 powered cars). There used to be another division called SU which was 325e’s and early 318i’s (M10 powered), but it has been phased out.

So basically there is only one division of SpecE30 now, those SO decals are mostly left over from the old days…

but, fwiw, the rules still say we have to have the SO decal on the car - all those ones without them could be protested!

Exactly Bruce.

I think, by the rules, anything but SO is wrong. I know the history, we just need to make things align. The rules do not reference the other 2 at all.

Also, LOTS of the cars out there had no SO or SE30 on their sides - only SpecE30. I don’t care at all what it needs to be, as long as I don’t go out and do one thing and have to change it next race.

Well, I had to remove my center vent to attach my right side net, so I think it’s time this gets addressed.

I’m also VERY eager to replace my exhaust. Bring on the specs.

Yo - I have the car up on blocks - and a sawz-all in my hand…

Where do I cut that stock exhaust?

Any idea when we’ll know?

Where to cut? After the crossover pipe. What goes in after you chop? That’s a great question!

I was going to cut a hole in the floorboard and pipe it straight up. Get a train whistle, and we will be the talk of Nationals next year!

It looks like the exhaust regs will be posted tomorrow night or sometime Wednesday.

Thanks Carter!

Any clarifiaction on the Class Designation and Gauge Placement?

Had the car on a lift (the solid brake line replaced) - the guy called me from the shop and asked if I was sure this was a race car with that exhaust (still rusty and stock, with the heat shield about to fall off). I think he just likes to pick on me now!

Thanks again!

Looks like we have a new standard on the exhaust. Going to finish that up this weekend (the old one is disintegrating as it sits).

Carter - what about the other two topics - the gauge placement and the desgnation?

#12

John - where did you find pictures from Mid-Ohio? Thanks,
ed

We are reviewing the Spec E30 Rules, line-by-line, this week and will make several clarifications by sometime next week.

For now, I can say that removing the center vents will be legal for guage installations and for cross-bars for cage reinforcement and/or center net mounting.

Exactly what is the purpose beind forcing an exhaust spec. What problem are we solving? If there is going ot be a HP limitation without regard to the engine being legal or not the rest of the engine rules are worthless. This is just mny opinion but I think that we are reinventing the wheel. Why not limit deck height, combustion chamber volume, etc etc like EVERYONE else?

EDIT: No engine teardown at a National event?

Walter - this thread has turned into almost everything else but the exhaust. The exhaust thread is:

Hope that helps!
