Flywheel Question

#1

I have a question. I want to stay within the rules and the spirit of the rules. Now I need a new clutch and flywheel. The rules state that there I can use and clutch and pressure plate as long as it mates to an unmodified factory flywheel. Well I know that I could replace it with a M20 flywheel and it will mate to my engine and I can use a M20 clutch.

While this is within the rules as I am using an unmodified factory flywheel is it within the spirit of the rules?

I probably won’t do the swap and will use a single mass 318is flywheel and a good clutch but I just wanted to ask and point out the issue that is questionable.

Thanks,
Daniel

Daniel:

Thanks for pointing this out.

Yes, the intent is to keep the flywheel that came on each engine type. We’ll look at making it specific in the Rules.

Another point. The single mass flywheel for the M42 engine is not legal. The unmodified factory flywheel must be ‘original’ for the chassis, model and year. All 1991 M42’s sold in the US were dual mass flywheels. The applicaton for the single mass flywheel is automatic transmissions, which were not available in 1991 models.

Good point.

I’m glad my machinest talked me into letting him resurface my current dual mass to hopefully save me some money instead of ordering another.

When I had to replace the dual mass it was painfully expensive ($1k) but it is compliant.
