Fire System

#1

Fellow Racers,

I am installing a fire system in my SE30 and had some question about it. I know there is much debate about Halon 1301, 1211 and AFFF, I have picked the Safecraft RS 10lb with Halon 1301. So to the people that have experience with 1301 how many nozzles and where are you placing them in the engine compartment? It seems that most are putting one because Halon is a gas and will spread to all corners of the engine bay. I would like to put it in the center of the car against the fire wall but space is limited and obstructed by the front strut brace, the left side is also cluttered, I want the gas to start dispersing before it is obstructed so my next choice in on the right side by the coil pointing towards the engine.

Any thoughts,

I’ve got a little more room to work with since I don’t have a front strut brace, but I have two nozzles located close to the power distribution block. One is pointed at the fuel rail and the other is pointed at the headers.

I have no idea if this is the “right” setup, but it made sense to me!

What type of system do you have, thanks

If these things spray like I’m told, that gas is going in every direction when it’s actuated anyway. I think anywhere close is good enough. You don’t have to have pin point accuracy due to the design of the nozzle.

FWIW, mine are at either side of the strut tower brace aiming at either side of the engine.

Hey. What strut tower brace do you have? I have the Ireland bar and I found an area on the drivers side of the firewall pointing towards the fuel side of the motor with little obstruction. Are you doing this before Infineon? If not, come take a look at my car…

See blue nozzle by passenger side strut tower. Its Halon and will cover a large area with hood down when deployed. Also have one near the driver and one through rear seat floor by gas tank.

That is exactly where I was going to put it, it seems logical for Halon if it were AFFF I would rethink.

I also have the Ireland bar.

Thanks All,

Yes if I had AFFF I might rethink also. Halon won’t put out a fire that has a good accelerant and a heat source. Just knock the flames back enough to get out and hope the corner works can come and save your car.

I had a friend empty two hand held halon bottles on his exhaust manifold when a small oil fire started. He came in, saw fire and he emptied his extinguisher on it. We looked and the fire started again. He emptied the second extinguisher on it, we looked and it started again. He really started to panic as we were out of extinguishers at that moment and he saw a water jug. He threw that on the fire and it went out. Luckily it did not crack the manifold but that was better than the whole car going up or damage to the wire harnesses.

It was pretty funny after it was over. A little touch and go while it was happening. Like one of those trick candles you put on a birthday cake but this was his 944 and it was no party at the time.

Hay, where did you mount your tank?

Off to dinner, Thanks

I’m trying to get installed before the weekend, thanks for the offer!

Did the two bottles not work because Halon as a gas disburses in open air, and the water was more concentrated at the origination point?

The Halon removed the oxygen from the fire and it went out. But there was still oil on the exhaust manifold and it was still very hot so it reignited. I think the water cooled the exhaust manifold so it could not reignite again.
