Extension for using Toyo RA-1 for spec classes

The RA1 is available in 205/50/15. Same tire as used by Spec Miata. I bought a set in late February and am told they are still available for purchase.

There is debate about whether the compound is the same as the “good old” RA1 - and the Miata guys will be scrambling to get them. They may be tough to get, but the spendy guys cough IndyJim cough will get their hands on them. :stuck_out_tongue:

My importer over in Japan already has a container on a ship.

Let the fun begin… :S
Actually I was just confirming that it was not a joke. I actually wasn’t sure at that moment if it applied to Se30.

Guys,

I would highly suggest not making any purchases of RA1s right this minute. I’m trying to get for sure verification that this applies to Spec E30.

Chris,
I was told by a nasa guy on another forum that you said it does apply to SE30.
I guess he was confused?

There’s some more info on the decision in this thread at nasaforums

Carter, can you explain what you mean by this? Do you believe that nobody will run RA1’s at nationals this year?
I’m thinking that at Nationals, virtually all drivers will want fresh tires and the performance seems to be very close between the RA-1 and the R888. I want to get to Nationals and if I do, I’ll be on the newest R888’s I can find instead of year-old (at best) RA-1’s.

Plus, the main reason I don’t think it will be a major factor (other than for those who sold or gave-away old RA-1’s…like me) overall in the Spec E30 world is that the only RA-1’s around are either older or well-worn. They certainly won’t be bad, but they probably won’t be any better than new(er) R888’s.

Yes, there might be a few new sets or RA-1’s somewhere on a dusty shelf but those will be gone very soon. So again, I don’t think it will be a major factor for our series.

I may be wrong but I’m thinking that virtually all Spec E30 racers will continue to buy R888’s if anything, because they are the only spec tire available…which is what a spec tire program is all about.

I agree with what you wrote here regarding rules stability but at NASA race weekends, NASA approves our rules. If they don’t approve a rule, or disapprove our spec tire rule, that’s the final word.

But again, I don’t think it will be a major factor in Spec E30.
What a debacle.

Say I didn’t just give away 12 RA1 scrubs a month ago, and I still have them. Am I allowed to race on leftover RA1’s this weekend? Can I save them for nationals instead? Can I buy RA1’s on craigslist a month from now and legally use them to race somewhere between then and the end of 2009?
As of 4-1-09, the Toyo RA-1 tire is legal in all Spec E30 races at NASA race weekends, and in all NASA Regions.

On a lighter note, regardless of the tires you use, don’t try to stretch them out too far.

I had a good lead on third and forth at VIR last weekend, until this happened…yes, that’s the left front and yes, it’s corded all the way around the tire and those are the steel belt wires.

Lesson learned!

I hope you are right about RA-1’s remaining out of production. I understand an announcement from Toyo regarding re-starting production is forthcoming…

If they start making them again, the hot setup at Nationals will be R888s for 15 minute qualifying sessions and probably for the 20 minute qualifying races, too. The RA-1 will be so much better at the end of a 40 minute championship race, so that’s what I’d do.

Do we have to run the same tire all around? I’m thinking the R888 up front and RA-1 in back… :woohoo:

PS - On RA-1s you would have finished 2nd.

He would have finished 2nd anyway if a girly miata hadn’t got in his way, oh wait… :silly:

I really don’t know what will happen with the production of the RA-1. But it will be interesting to find out.

And while I was never a real threat to Cobetto, he wasn’t getting away until my left front gave up. Had I been more attentive to tire wear and rotated them, I might have kept second.

Of course, all racers have good “what if” excuses…

I’m looking for a set of good used R-888s if anyone want to unload a set.

The 205/50R15 Toyo RA-1 will be put back into production for a limited time. No time frame on arrival yet…

Enjoy !!
